What the Food Is Like On A Navy Ship
I was in the navy for 8 years and have had food on navy destroyers, aircraft carriers, submarine tenders and shore service galleys.
When a ship is in port, it always had plenty of fresh food on board. Just before a ship goes out to sea, it is replenished with new food and drink.
If you’re going to be at sea for a while, you’ll start to miss some of the things on board that you take for granted. Fresh milk is usually one of the first things to come out. They replace it with powdered milk, and it’s not even close to real milk.
Don’t get me wrong, the food on the ship is really very good, and there is enough of it!
When you’re in port, you have access to the freshest foods the navy has, just like your hometown grocery store.
When you wake up in the morning, you go down to the galley and enter the food line. There might be 10 guys in line when you go down to eat, and breakfast is usually served most of the morning, because not everyone can eat at the same time, and then it would be too crowded. On smaller ships such as destroyers and frigates you would normally have 4 meals a day. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and Mid Rats, a small meal served around midnight for people who are still hungry and want something to eat.
On the destroyer I was stationed at, we would also regularly have kitchen in line. We always had a 55-gallon drum that was cut in half, and somebody from the Supply Department would fry up cheeseburgers, and that was always nice, even in the middle of the Indian Ocean, we’d be cooking outside.
For breakfast, you can usually order your eggs to order, there will be a cook or 2, who take requests of how you want your eggs done, they had a rule that no more than 5 eggs, I usually only had 2 at most of the time, and I would tell them I want a ham and cheese omelette with 2 eggs, and after I get my eggs, I go down the food line, and I have everything I want with it, bacon, sausage, like a little . buffet really.
Usually on Fridays, if we were in port, we’d have steak and lobster tails on Fridays. I never had a lobster tail until I joined the navy. My dad never liked seafood when I was growing up, so we never had any in the house.
Lunch and dinner were also like a buffet, almost anything they had was a line of good food, and you take what you want, and you can always get a new tray and go back in line again, if you’re that hungry. .
The aircraft carrier I was on was actually too big a ship for me, and I was so glad I only had to stay there for two weeks. The food was also good, and it had 2 galleys, so one was always open, if the other closed for cleaning or whatever.
When you have like 5,000 people on board, you better have somewhere to eat all the time, just like a casino, if the ship had slot machines, it would be quite similar to the same atmosphere as a buffet.
When I was in transit somewhere in the Indian Ocean, I had to go to Saudi Arabia to catch a flight to Italy, and a helicopter took me and about 5 other enlisted guys to this boat in the ‘USNS, and we were supposed to just do it. get on the ship for 2 days, until we get off the ship. They had an enlisted laborer 1st class who had his own cabin, which on a normal navy ship only officers get.
It was a USNS ship, which meant it was manned by civilians and supported by Navy personnel. When we ate in the dining room every day, a waiter would come to our table and take your order. I thought to myself, you’ve got to be kidding me, these guys are wearing civilian clothes and a waiter is taking their order, and I can’t even believe this is real. They give you a choice of 2 selections, like on an airplane, and they bring you ice cream for dessert, and I thought that was unreal.
Most of the civilians on that ship weren’t as cool as the navy guys, probably because they thought the navy worked for them, which on that ship they sure did, and I thought of several ways to save the navy a boatload of money. !
Submarines get some of the best food in the fleet. The boys are under water sometimes for so long, and can you imagine if they didn’t have good food?
They drink a drink they call bug juice, which is really Kool-aid or a fruit punch drink. You had better get into the habit of drinking insect juice, if you like something to drink with your meal, after the fresh milk is gone.
Here’s one of the craziest things I’ve seen on the ship, and all ships do it! It’s a waste of good food, but I guess you can see how it protects states from pests and bugs, but really?
Whenever you go out to sea far, you usually stop in Hawaii to buy new stores, as they call them, which means you’re stocking the ship with fresh food and meat and things like that.
When you travel around the world, and then you come back, before you go through Hawaii, you have to throw away all the food that might have any chance of having some kind of bug from another country, so we have a task force, maybe 20 guys, and the job is to make a line from the coolers of food, which a ship has several decks, all with elevators to bring it all together, and we unload all the food, 50-pound bags of new onions, a heap and lots of them, big boxes of lettuce, lots of boxes.
We throw almost everything left in the coolers overboard into the ocean, and all the guys can’t believe we’re throwing all this good food overboard, and we bet a lot of sharks follow the boat, and you can imagine how much food an aircraft carrier would launch overhead. An aircraft carrier has a place at the back of the ship to throw trash into the ocean, but only when you’re 50 miles or more out to sea, so it doesn’t wash ashore and so much stuff gets thrown out to sea. ocean, plus food. You can sit and smoke a cigarette and look at all the people who have trash to throw in the ocean, which is kind of weird, but you can’t have them pile up on the boat.
Overall I would have to say the food at the marina is good, maybe even great, I never thought it would be as nice and plentiful as it was, and a few days after being out at the marina I swear their spaghetti is still the best I’ve had in my life!
