Raising a Jock

Remember the original ‘Friday Night Lights’? High school football back in the day…those fall football games when we were in school? Popcorn, cheerleaders, the older boys strutting around in shoulder pads, huge helmets and cheerful if muddy smiles. Win or lose, we would always meet after the game for hamburgers and our carefree high school life continued. Sure, high school sports in the Midwest were slightly more frozen than here in Florida, but they’re still fundamentally the same.

Fast forward to 2009, Florida-style high school football. These carefree memories are a fun novelty for today’s high school athlete. Playing soccer today is a very serious and often expensive business for thousands of young athletes.

According to the online publication ESPN Rise: “Many people clearly believe that Florida is the best high school football state.” Lake Mary Florida graduate All-American linebacker at USC and first-round pick Keith Rivers of the Cincinnati Bengals is a perfect example of a “local kids make good on their dream” story.

But athletic success doesn’t come easy or cheap for most young people in high school sports today, even here in Florida. Doug Peters, athletic director at Lake Mary High School, tells me that his school alone averages 800 student-athletes annually, and only about 15 of those will go to college on athletic scholarships after graduation each year.

Although their parents don’t know it yet, these young football players already know they need real marketing in the form of: professionally produced highlight videos, personal trainers and even a “scout” who contacts various schools on their behalf of the player in order to play college football. The commitment required of today’s high school athletes is so different because it involves an even greater emotional, personal and financial investment from the entire family.

Take 16-year-old Trevor Alfredson (full disclosure: my own teenage son), who has been playing soccer and loving it since he was six. “I’ve wanted to play Division 1 football for as long as I can remember,” says Trevor. And as a sophomore college player, Trev’s season also involved hiring a company to make a highlight video, talking to two different recruiting services companies, working out with former NFL player Dana Sanders, and attending a called “combines”.

For those uninitiated in today’s “jock” lingo: High school football officially pits test-athletes against a series of physical skills like speed, agility and strength while several college coaches look on. The pressure to get noticed is incredibly heavy for these boys, even at the age of 14! The cost of sophomore football alone, aiming to play ‘division 1 football’ can reach $5500.

The pressure and problems of ‘doing it’ are not unique to football either. Lake Mary’s Lee Morgan is a junior who plays two types of soccer (club soccer and varsity soccer) AND soccer, so he will have the best chance to play a varsity sport at a good school. A super-talented first string football player, Lee has already emailed several college coaches (part of his personal marketing plan) and received a response from some of Florida’s college coaches. For a fee, Lee is invited to summer football camps so coaches can get an up-close-and-personal look.

As intensely competitive as college sports have become for young athletes today, Lee tells us, “I’ve been playing football since I was 7 years old, and now I want to keep all my options open.” His educator father Walt, says “part of the added pressure today is because the cost of college has also gone up, which can put more pressure on athletic scholarships.”

Chip Humble from Florida works for CSA Prep Stars and scouts players for various schools. Chip says most parents need help understanding how recruitment really works. And with the exception of those rare “blue-chip players” like Keith Rivers, “many good athletes go unnoticed and unseen because they haven’t been marketed properly.”

Pros in the know say the main reason a lot of guys don’t get drafted is that no one knows about it. As Chip reminds parents on his sports list, “Just because your child was good at Little League or a standout at their own school, it doesn’t mean they’re a ‘blue chip’ All-American athlete because does to college coaches.”

Raising an athlete at this point means a personal profile with a website; following coaches on Twitter, verified game stats and lineups, and that quality highlight video that hundreds of college coaches have seen. Dreams don’t come cheap these days, even in high school!
