Helping Baby Sleep Through the Night

Babies need to eat regularly to stay healthy and gain the weight they need. Getting up in the night for these all-important feeds is an expected part of the routine for all new parents. However, as those first days and weeks turn into months, many parents begin to ask themselves the important question, how do you get your baby to sleep through the night?

It is important to establish baby sleep patterns early in a baby’s first year. Once a baby has outgrown the need to feed through the night, sleeping through the night is healthy for her and also healthy for her tired parents.

Babies’ sleep problems can be very debilitating. If you’re wondering how to get your baby to sleep through the night, baby sleep training is an option to consider. Sleep training usually involves letting your baby learn to soothe himself back to sleep by gently patting his back but not holding him when he wakes up too often.

These babies can benefit from a program developed by Dr. Harvey Karp. The theory of Dr. Karp is that stressed babies need to recreate the womb environment around them to calm down and sleep well. The environment of the uterus can be recreated with what Dr. Karp calls the “Five S’s.”

The first of the “Five S’s” is “suck,” which is, of course, allowing a baby to suck on a bottle or pacifier. “Swinging” is the second S. A baby will find comfort in any rocking motion, such as riding in a car or carrier. This gentle movement will remind him of the constant movement he felt in his mother’s womb. The third S is called “shushing”. This means that babies are comforted by sounds that remind them of the steady, gentle hum of their mother’s heartbeat in the womb. The fourth S, “side,” refers to the fact that most babies are most comfortable lying on their left side. Once they are fast asleep, their parents can put them in the safest position to sleep on their backs. The final S of the program of Dr. Karp is “impaling”. Swaddling is the ancient practice of wrapping a baby in a soft blanket. Wrapping a baby in this way allows him to feel the closed walls of the womb again.

If getting your baby to sleep through the night has become a problem, new parents should try the “Five S” program. A baby who is calm and relaxed reliving the comforting world of the womb will be much more likely to sleep through the night and hopefully, baby sleep problems will be a thing of the past.
