Should Women Hire a Male or Female Trainer and 17 Things to Consider

Jessica is a 38 year old woman, out of shape having never worked out before. She is not over weight, but weak and lethargic and feels out of shape. She says her clothes don’t fit like they used to and needs to lose a little weight and improve the tone and shape of her body to feel better about herself. She is considering hiring a trainer.

Jessica joins a health club a couple of days ago and asks her health club consultant about trainers. She gathers business cards of all the trainers, then goes to the health clubs website and read the credentials about every trainer. Jessica has narrowed it down to three trainers.

The next day she walks into the club seeking a consultation from all trainers. She has gotten a free consultation from three trainers and narrowed it down to two. A female trainer and one male trainer, likes them both but she’s having a difficult time deciding which one to hire.

The male trainer has trained more clients in his five years of training. He tells Jessica that 90% of his clients are women, but in this industry most clients will always be women.

The female trainer has pretty much the same credentials but she specializes in athletes. Most of her clients are male, basketball players, football, bodybuilders and other athletes.

The Female Trainer

Personally, I would say the female trainer has more experience, and a more formidable trainer in many ways. Training athletes gives her a knowledge base I feel that is unmatched by most trainers. But, she could be overly qualified to train Jessica. Her in-depth knowledge is not needed at such a low fitness level of a beginner like Jessica that has never worked out before.

The female trainers approach might be a little more stringent than that of the male trainer. Why? Athletes require a higher level of focus, dedication and more difficult workouts than the average person.

Athletes get in shape to compete not to be fit. Most athletes are not balanced in their approach, NOR SHOULD THEY BE. They want to achieve their goals come hell or high water and they will do whatever it takes to perform at the highest level possible in their sport.

Now don’t get me wrong the female trainer is smart enough to know that she would have to tone Jessica’s workout down to accommodate her needs and wants, but still may not have the level of empathy and patience of the male trainer needed to train a client of low level fitness level.

She might expect more than Jessica can put out in the beginning of her fitness quest. The female trainer may not be able to adjust to Jessica’s level of focus and commitment she’s accustomed to when training the more athletic minded clients. She might give her a more vigorous training program; she might give her an eating plan that will be a little too bland and strict etc. This is not saying that’s its all bad. Personally I think most clients should seek this type of trainer. A coach not a cheer leader!

The Male Trainer

The male trainer on the other hand is no slouch; he is experienced and has familiarity training almost any person that walks into the gym. He has worked and put in hundreds of hours reading, researching and implementing programs that help clients accomplish everyday fitness needs such as losing weight, shaping and toning and improving overall health.

The male trainer may demonstrate greater patience required to help a client discover behaviors that will lead to improved fitness with a more balanced lifestyle. The male trainer is use to the attitudes, mental, spiritual, and emotional states of men and women that JUST want to improve their fitness.

This is not saying the female trainer is not capable of the same possessing some of the attributes to train Jessica, but her mind set could be that of an athlete, which could be too much in the beginning.

Does it Really Matter Male or Female Trainer

There are physical differences between men and women will affect the approach to getting a person in shape. I will go more in depth in this in the future but below are just some of the physical differences.

1) Women tend to be weaker in the upper body than men

2) Women carry more bodyfat men

3) Women’s pelvises tilt more than men

4) Women have less muscle mass than men

5) Women are more flexible than men

Really, it does not matter, its simply a matter of a male being educated in those differences.

When deciding to hire a trainer male or female it all depends on your needs, what you are trying to accomplish and how well you gel with the person you are considering hiring.

The male trainer seems better suited for Jessica based on what he has to bring to the table, simply interacting with clients just like Jessica on a daily basis.

Questions to ask a potential trainer

It does not matter the gender of a trainer but, you must ask questions and feel comfortable with the person you want to hire and have a game plan in place. Your ultimate goal is to find the right match for you, your personality and lifestyle.

Here are questions I feel are important.

1) How many years have the trainer been working out themselves?? I say they should have at least 5 years or personal fitness training. You want someone that’s been in the trenches.

2) How long have they been trainers?: At least 2 years but I prefer 5 years or more. This is important the more clients a trainer have trained the more experiencedthey are.

3) How many clients do they currently train?: It boils down to experience the more clients a trainer has now, tells you about their popularity and how well they get along with others. Usually great trainers have a personality that draws people to them. This person is fun to be around, yet motivating and has a great coaching style at the same time.

4) How many clients have they trained since they have been a trainer:?I would say they must have trained at least 20 new clients’ a year. If they have been in the industry for over 5 years they should have trained at least 100.If you were going to have heart surgery, would you want the doctor that’s have 20 surgeries under their belt or 10. Well this is a no brainer. Experience does matter!

5) Are they certified?: Most people make a big deal out of this one, but I don’t! Why? Remember the goal of getting certified is like any other exam. It’s to pass the test! Pay more attention to the amount of courses a trainer has taken. There is something to be said about someone that is willing to continuously learn. Ask the trainer what other courses they have under their belts. The more diverse a trainer is the more valuable they are to your fitness. Training comes from experience and continuing to educate yourself. Taking continuing education classes, teaching continuing education courses at colleges to the public, creating other programs like boot camp classes and teaching activities such as kickboxing makes a more knowledgeable and fun trainer. With that being said, when a person gets a certification that usually shows their commitment to the industry fulfilling that minimal standard. If they don’t have a certification they are demonstrating a lack of commitment to their clients and the industry, you should look somewhere else.

6) How long certified or with degree?: At least 2 years. See above and observe the first 5 listed on page to make a decision.

7) How long do they keep their clients?: If people are holding on to this trainer for at least a year paying them hundreds a month, there must be a good reason!

8) Will they give you a fitness assessment how will they get you to your fitness destination?: One of the most vital questions. This is by far one of the most qualifying questions. When you are sick and go to the doctor do, you expect her to ask questions, look at your body, and assess the current condition of your health. Of course you do. Then why would you expect to start an exercise program without first assessing your current fitness level? Evaluating your fitness level is the surest way to personal fitness success. What does the evaluation accomplish specifically? It allows you to know exactly where to start with your fitness program instead of shooting in the dark. It eliminates trial and error, enabling you to set goals that are easy to track and achieve results you can see on your body and paper. If your trainer does not perform strength, cardiovascular, bodyfat test, weigh, & measure, and a simple eating analysis and this is the minimal don’t hire them. They are lazy and not giving you there all. End of discussion!

9) Do they have clients that will talk to you?: If you sense their hesitation to give you clients to talk to, think twice about hiring them. If they are more than happy to and better yet, will introduce a client to you already in the gym on the spot that’s a good sign.

10) Questions you might ask a client of a trainer:

11)Have you accomplished your goals since being with trainer?

12)What kind of progress are you making?

13)Is he or she on time for sessions most of the time?

14)Have you heard any negative things about the trainer?

15)What’s their personality like?

16)Before you hire anyone go to the gym and watch how they react to their clients. If they have a studio arrives early and observes their interaction with other clients.

17)Finally – The Sixth Sense. When working with someone once or more a week you’ll create a friendly relationship. You will talk about work and your personal life. Hopfully they will listen and not give their input. Your trainer will learn what motivates you; how you respond to exercise, learn your personality and moods, your ups and downs etc. So, it’s important you feel comfortable with them.

If you sense that you may not get along with the trainer, don’t waste your time or money. If the trainer is a blatant flirt or makes sexual remarks avoid them like the plague. If you feel sexual tension avoid it by all means RUN. Nothing good comes out of that!

Your goal is to get in shape as stress free as possible. If there is any stress in the trainer client relationship it will end badly. Any thing that makes you uncomfortable, seek to interview more trainers. Use your intuition!
