A Survival Guide To Live Safely

We live in turbulent times, and in many ways dangerous. Listen to the news on the radio, watch TV or read the newspapers, it will be enough to get your heart racing and your blood pressure up. Almost everything you hear or read is beyond belief and more than enough to make you cringe. Innocent bystanders are often caught up in these horrors by being in the wrong place when these incidents occur. Everyone should be concerned about their safety and the safety of those they love. In the context in which I use the term safety, it refers not only to the physical and mental aspects of safety, but also to safety in all aspects of daily life. This means keeping the body safe from physical, emotional and financial harm. On the financial side, it means taking care to protect yourself from all forms of identity theft and being aware of the hundreds of scams and scammers who perpetrate these schemes on the unsuspecting individual. Survival means taking charge of your life, and that starts with being aware of everything that’s going on in your life. Awareness and taking charge are the key words. This awareness starts in your home from the moment you get up in the morning until you go to sleep at night. Survival is defined in the dictionary as “a life beyond the life of another person, thing, or event, a survivor.” What this means for the individual is that everyone must practice a 2-step program to survive.

  1. Security: Life can change forever in a fraction of a moment due to an event caused by an incident, accident or event caused by an unscrupulous person or persons seeking to enrich themselves at your expense.
  2. Health: Here it is up to the individual as they literally hold the state of their health in their own hands. Staying healthy is a full-time job for the average person and requires a 24/7 commitment to it. What to look for in this 2-step program explains how we should look at security.

The issue of safety begins at home. Most everyone is aware of environmental air pollution; however, many people do not know that the air pollution in their homes can be much greater than that outside. This puts them at serious risk for a multitude of health problems, because you spend most of the day at home. You spend a third of your life sleeping in your house, and at least another third doing chores, reading, watching TV, relaxing, etc. There are environmental aspects to consider. It is important that you start with your first aid kit. Check the expiration dates on all medications. Throw away anything that has expired. Don’t flush them down the toilet. They must be disposed of properly and there are facilities for these purposes. And make sure all medicines are stored safely out of the reach of small children.

Once you’ve dealt with the environmental aspects of your home, it’s time to assess other safety issues that may be present. If there are children in the home, it should be made child-friendly by examining what could harm a child. Of particular concern is their access to medicine cabinets, as mentioned above, and next would be the kitchen cupboards where household cleaners and sprays are normally kept. A child will swallow anything in their hands. Child poisoning happens all too often in the home. If there are seniors in the home, it should also be made senior friendly. This requires removing any carpeting that could pose a tripping hazard. Furniture, or any object that interferes with the walking space should be moved to a safe area or removed completely. Showers and bathtubs require non-slip mats and grab bars. Many falls that happen to the elderly often result in a broken hip, wrist or arm at home more than anywhere else. The bathroom and kitchen are the most dangerous areas for small children and the elderly, and should be closely observed and evaluated.

A great deal of security awareness is especially necessary once you leave home. And here, the key word is “AWARENESS”. You have to be aware of everything that happens around you. If you drive, you must wear a seat belt. Don’t text or use your cell phone unless it’s in your hand. And of course, if you have even one drink, don’t drive. Not a day goes by when you hear on the news that a driver or passenger has died because they weren’t wearing a seat belt. How hard is it to put on your seat belt, it only takes a second. Another cause of fatalities is running red lights or not stopping at a stop sign. Drinking and driving, causing many fatalities, is a constant cause for concern. Speeding puts everyone at risk. So heed these warnings and don’t take things for granted.

Workplace safety is another issue of great concern. More injuries occur in the workplace than is generally known. The main concern is jobs that require repetitive movements. I have written several articles about this particular concern in the workplace. Doing the same job over and over again becomes tedious and boring. The injuries that occur are usually to the employees who operate the machinery. For example, using a stamping machine for 8 hours a day is an accident waiting to happen. In this case, there should be a schedule by which these employees can switch jobs doing something completely different. When an employee changes to another job, his mindset automatically changes and his focus becomes more suited to the new job.

And finally, as part of your survival guide, taking care of your physical being in a personal way is of utmost importance. Annual checkups with your health care provider and visiting your dentist twice a year is a good place to start. If you smoke, you must quit. Wine is limited to 2 drinks for men and 1 drink for women. Maintain a healthy diet, eliminating all trans fats, fried foods and limiting sodium intake. Eat enough fruits; vegetables, whole grains and fiber make up a healthy diet. Watch your calorie intake by eating smaller portions and eat 5 smaller meals instead of 3 larger meals. Next, you need to stay active by moving as much as possible. You should find an exercise program that you enjoy and stick with. Using the survival guide above will keep you safe and help you live a safe, healthy and vigorous lifestyle.
