Watch or not: You definitely don’t want to miss this movie if you like commercial movies, typically Bollywood and can digest a cliché story again, only in a stylized and big budget avatar.

Karan Johar this time serves you the same old coffee in a new cup. High school classmates getting jealous and ambitious out of a desire to win a competition has been a tried and tested script in Bollywood for a long time. But the director ensures that the film is an audio-visual treat for the audience by successfully including picturesque locales, designer costumes and the language of today’s youth.

Rohan (Varun Dhawan), a rich and spoiled brat, enters the school when Abhimanyu (Sidharth Malhotra), a hard-working and ambitious small-town boy steps in as a potential threat.

With a few scenes featuring Shanaya (Alia Bhatt), a rich and brand-conscious girl trying to win back the love of her relationship with Rohan, the film’s plot mainly revolves around how the best friends they become enemies, with one trying to win the title of “Student of the Year” to make it big in life and the other to prove to his father that he is no longer his good-for-nothing son.

Student of the Year Review: Screenplay Analysis

The script has nothing new to offer and is very predictable. Though decorated with characters like a gay dean (Rishi Kapoor), the script lacks the freshness expected from Bollywood’s finest like Karan Johar. This, added to the plot of a 5-star school with world-class facilities and students in casual clothes, made the script even harder to digest.

Student of the Year Review: Star Performances

Simply put, Varun Dhawan brings the dance moves, Sidharth Malhotra showcases his acting skills and alas! Alia Bhatt hardly has any dialogue to her credit. She comes off as a barbie doll with average performance. The rest of the actors like Ronit Roy, Rishi Kapoor and a handful of school students added a lot of value to this film. All the three actors get a good chance to flaunt their hot and enviable bodies on screen.

Student of the Year Review: Direction, Music and Technical Aspects

One thing that surely won’t disappoint you is the steering. Karan Johar has lived up to his expectations once again. As far as music is concerned, the USP of this film is to use loads of old Bollywood songs throughout the film, at various points. While the lyrics of ‘Ishq Wala Love’ raised eyebrows, the rest of the catchy and upbeat songs are entertaining. The adopted narration, with fainting students narrating the tale, along with the script, is worth appreciating.

Student of the Year Review: The Last Word

Go for it, if you put style over substance. Another commercial entertainer, with a high budget, fresh faces and entertainment.
