Replacement Pool Dehumidifiers for Hotels
The lifespan of old technology hotel pool dehumidifiers is coming to an end!
Thousands of hotels with indoor pools built over the past 30 years have reached the stage of upgrading or replacing their end-of-life pool dehumidifiers. Many systems did not reach their useful life due to poor pool chemistry; improperly designed or sized systems, improperly installed, lack of negative pressure, or poorly designed air supply/duct systems. Many pool systems are no longer energy efficient and operating costs are high. For any hotel manager, it is an extremely difficult process to reduce operational and energy costs with indoor swimming pools. However, today’s technology in hotel pool dehumidifiers offers a significant reduction in energy costs and many offer a wide range of upgrade options over what was available even 5-10 years ago.
When retrofitting your hotel, there are several important areas to review to ensure your new pool dehumidifier offers all the updated “GREEN” technology, energy recovery and benefits that support longer life and a healthy and stable environment in the pool room.
It is not enough to remove the dehumidifier from the existing pool and put the same system back in the swimming pool. Before you make your purchasing decisions to “just replace what’s in place,” you’ll want to start with your pool hall data. Don’t necessarily rely on your in-place pool dehumidifier (although we would like to determine your existing tonnage and CFM), as equipment may be oversized or undersized, may not have the necessary air changes, which was very common years ago. It was also very common years ago to size a system that was not accurately based on the air and pool water temperatures maintained by the hotel facilities.
Let’s go back to the drawing board and start from scratch. When replacing a system, homeowners will review the tonnage and cfm of their existing pool system to size the next pool dehumidifier. This is a good place to start, but each customer should take some additional steps to ensure that the size, airflow, and evaporation rates are met with the new system. The following data is recommended:

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW SWIMMING POOL DEHUMIDIFICATION SYSTEM
(1) THE FUTURE FOR ALL SWIMMING POOL DEHUMIDIFIERS is to reduce size, refrigerant and maintenance costs!
Today’s technology is much more advanced (called secondary coolant technology). The future is in refrigerant reduction, primarily because of the expense and environmental damage caused by hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerants, such as R-22, and other refrigerants. All manufacturers are aware that this will be a constantly changing scenario and as such they should be or are designing pool dehumidification systems to meet the more “green”/Leed requirements, which will use a liquid/dry cooler to on the cooling side of the equation. . This technology is not new to the industry; KMART has used secondary refrigerant technology for over 30 years in its buildings. Several pool dehumidifier manufacturers have been using this liquid cooling technology for over 20 years. Other companies are now beginning to understand the importance of reducing the refrigerants used in today’s pool dehumidifiers.
Greater moisture removal capacity and greater efficiency:
The concern many engineers and contractors have is whether a reduced refrigerant charge is a trade-off for efficiency. When properly designed, reduced cooling systems are generally more efficient. They are as efficient as their DX counterparts on high cooling demand on summer design days and up to 5-6% more efficient than conventional DX pool dehumidifiers the rest of the year.
However, we advise all customers to carefully review claims of “up to 80-90% refrigerant reduction” as this can be very misleading. Let’s use some comparisons: an EC096 8-ton pool dehumidifier with glycol/dry cooler technology provides a total of 9.25 lbs. of R410A refrigerant in the fully installed system. A comparable NE08 series 8-ton system (say, even verified), even with the claim of “new” secondary cooling technology, uses nearly 34 lbs. of coolant That’s still almost 4 times the amount of coolant. A nominal 7.5/8 ton DCA3600 unit does not use R410A. This system uses R407C refrigerant with a stated factory charge of 45 lbs. of coolant This also does not include the outer condenser package.
So do your research carefully when comparing products to products, as not all pool dehumidifiers are reduced refrigerant management systems. When buying competitive equipment, always check the following, as everything eventually comes at a cost, be it parts or future service/maintenance:
– Refrigerant (type R410a, R134A, R407C, etc.)?
– How many pounds of refrigerant in the unit and the total system installed?
INDOOR POOL SYSTEM MUST PURCHASE THE FOLLOWING SYSTEM:
– A fully packaged system (split system)
– Lower equipment cost
– Small footprint to adapt to the existing space
– Dehumidify and maintain the environment between 50-60% relative humidity
– Heat the space
– Cool the space
– Complete heat recovery/heat recovery (free heat in the space and pool water)
– Offers the option of heating domestic hot water for the hotel
Pool Dehumidifier Considerations:
– Listed UL, (CuL) and/or ETL and/or CSA certificate
– Minimum amount of refrigerant per ton in the installed pool dehumidification system
– R410A to US standards, R-22 is no longer available
– Should have an average lifespan of 15-20 years if regularly maintained and pool chemistry is properly balanced
– Minimal footprint, vertical, horizontal and counter-flow design
– Single or double compressor systems
– Evaporator coils: 3 and 4 field cleanable coils, or 6 and 8 row coils that are impossible to clean once they get dirty?
– Longer guarantees
– Indoor or rooftop pool equipment facilities: out of sight, out of mind! (Higher costs with roof installation, ducting, plumbing, crane and 30-40% more maintenance costs over the life of the system usually due to lack of preventive maintenance).
Finally, many facility managers are beginning to understand the importance of automated pool covers. Swimming pools are one of the largest utility costs of any hotel and as such are under more severe scrutiny than in the past due to the higher operating and maintenance costs of pool rooms.
Once a pool is covered, the pool does not lose heat (saving on pool heating costs), the pool does not evaporate (saving on dehumidification system run time), and finally, chemicals are not lost to the air during the evaporation cycle (savings in chemical product costs). We recommend that all facilities consider a pool cover where possible. Even covering a pool from 11pm to 6am – you’ll see a cost reduction!
