Seeking and Accepting Mediocrity As Excellence – What’s the Problem?
I recently had a discussion on my Facebook page that elicited a good response, so I thought it warranted further discussion here.
The discussion started as my simple note of the ever increasing number of people/clients with eating disorders ie bulimia or anorexia. Also, the increase seems to be more in young men/boys than in young women (who strangely may be taking the opposite route and getting older). I also suggested that there seems to be a lack of desire in people to want to work, or even to want to carry an above average amount of lean mass and strength. The desire for men to be masculine, or simply masculine as an acceptable trait (by most) seems to have passed. That the big, the strong, the “men” are really a dying breed today.
To clarify, in my original statement I wasn’t calling people who have a healthy relationship with training and nutrition and are achieving their goals of getting lean, ripped, or shredded, that’s fine. I’m talking about a growing population of people who have a real fear of body fat; a fear of adding one, a fear of athletics, a fear of work and a fear of waking up one day – HUGE. There seems to be an effort by young men to remain boys, and not progress into men.
Like most great discussions, this did not stagnate, but evolved into larger issues. He moved on to a discussion of how “the masses have really settled for an occasional glimpse of mediocrity!” (Shawn Phillips) Unfortunately, as Kalle Beck added, most girls these days, on average, outdo and can outdo their boyfriends.
That’s all well and good, and I’m all for women empowering and empowering themselves, but even if we bring this down to a simple, primal hormonal level, that’s impossible without an affirmative effort to make it the norm , unlike the occasional one. genetic exception
Shawn Phillips is absolutely right; it’s more of a desire and a big push to be LESS. There is a constant focus on deprivation and rest rather than a focus on the positive aspects of growth and progress; a real challenge to your natural inclination to grow and mature. An ignorance that this early self-imposed inhibition of your natural ability to grow, build, get strong, will eliminate the negative (body fat) by default and in a positive way rather than a negative way.
The real issue though I think is as Shawn pointed out; it is more than a fear of fatness, a fear of growth and maturity, and more than a problem of this generation’s desire and real goal to be less than they could be; a goal to avoid what they are able to do with little effort compared to what they could achieve if they strived to excel.
when did this happen Why did this happen? Can we fix it, and how? When did it become unacceptable to show any desire, inner and outer strength, to achieve more than you and others might think possible?
My friend Julie Watkins chimed in on this discussion and her recap of a recent viewing of the new movie, Twightlight with her young daughter. I can’t help but think it’s largely driven by the media, as is much of everything else, but when and why? When did we achieve this change where as people, we don’t measure ourselves by our personal, mental and physical growth, to measure ourselves by how much we can avoid it?
If you take the time to look, children and young adults are most revered by their peers for their ability to avoid hard work and achievement. These poor results are put on a pedestal by the amount of external products, “material goods”, that they can get with as little mental, physical and emotional work, stress and growth as they can. It is the child who has acquired the ability to exist, to live like a madman in the ass of life, only along the journey that receives the most praise. BECAUSE?
I can’t help but know that this pursuit and acceptance of mediocrity and global underperformance as excellence today is simply a hard road to a narrow baseline, in our world, in our country, and in our lives in all the fronts A personal, physical, spiritual and governmental downward spiral. We have to claim it somewhere, somehow. Take an example and pass it on, of course; but WE, those of us who have love, desire and passion for growth, advancement and the joy of hard work and what it brings us, need to be the majority again, or we will go the way of the dinosaur. It scares me to see this world, a world full of existence, but lacking life.
