Love-Hate Relationship With A Car

Back in the late 70s, and several years before I got my driver’s license, there was one car above the rest that made my heart skip a beat: a Triumph Spitfire. The Spitfire (lovingly referred to as Spitty by enthusiasts) is a British two-seater sports convertible that looks sexy and is great to drive despite having a small engine. The Spitty was manufactured from 1962 to 1980, after which the company went bankrupt.

I was in love with the car. All of this made us want one really bad. I saw myself driving with the top down, sunglasses on and my arm hanging out the window. It wasn’t even about getting chicks with him – I was only 16 and life was about getting a car. Price-wise, a used one was within reach for me, even though I was only a weekend dishwasher at a Mexican restaurant.

My neighbor had a Spitty that he took to high school every day. He put a custom exhaust system on it that gave it a charging sound. You could hear it coming from a mile away. I finally got to ride it and that’s when I knew I had to have one.

The whole issue of getting one was met with great opposition from my parents. They thought the car was dangerously small and would eat me out of house and home with repairs. Like many teenagers, I didn’t listen to them and bought one behind their backs. I thought I cycled every morning to a friend’s house who let me park the Spitty there, drive the car and then cycle home to keep the car hidden from my parents.

Well, karma kicked my ass. From the moment I bought my first Spitty I had nothing but massive problems. After I bought it, the car broke down on the way back to my friend’s house where it was supposed to be parked. I had no tools, it was dark, mosquitoes were eating me alive, so I took it home with a plan to deal with it the next morning.

The next morning I went back to where I left the car, but it was gone. I ran to the nearest pay phone and called the police. They said it hadn’t been towed, so they were going straight to the scene to file a report – it must have been stolen.

A team with two officers arrived at the scene and one started asking me the questions for the report while the other walked around the hilly area looking for clues. Ten minutes later, the detective who was looking for clues said “I found the car!”. I ran over to where he was only to find a skeleton of my car. I haven’t had the car in 24 hours and now it’s a skeleton. The car was stripped for parts by thieves. Only the body remained: no engine, no interior, no tires, no indicators… nothing.

Needless to say, my parents were furious that I was being defiant. They were especially angry because I didn’t have insurance. All I heard from them was “serves you well”. Like a clam, I shut down and never spoke the word Spitfire in front of my parents again. In my heart, however, there was still a burning desire to have one.

Years after college and on the job scene, I then had enough extra cash to buckle down and finally get a Spitty. Of course it would be my secondary vehicle because it had been over ten years and those cars were becoming unreliable classics. Good ones were very hard to find. Back then we didn’t have eBay or any place on the internet to find one.

I ended up finding one in a nearby town, but it needed some repairs and cosmetic attention. The car seemed to be running pretty well, but it was still not in a condition to enjoy myself as a driver. Almost a year after buying that Spitty, it was on the road and looking sharp. There, finally, I was working on a Triumph Spitfire.

Life was great until my car broke down. One thing after another and money poured in constantly, I raised the white flag of surrender and put it up for sale. It was hard to find a buyer for that car, but I finally got rid of it. I was as happy that day as I was the day I bought it.

Twenty years later I got a call from my brother who was kicking tires at a Ferrari dealership in Denver, Colorado. I was standing next to a Triumph Spitfire in that showroom full of Ferraris. It was a one owner with 24,000 original miles. He told me the car looked new. His intention was not to increase my interest in buying it, but to let me know because he knew how much I loved those cars.

Not an hour later I was sending a ridiculous amount of money to Ferrari in Denver. The car was becoming mine. I was going to have the most amazing Spitty on the planet. I could not believe it. With more excitement than I had experienced in years, I shared the news with my wife. Fortunately, he remembered my passion for these stupid strollers and supported me.

The car arrived at our home in Florida. It was beyond my expectations. It really was like a new car in every way. I felt guilty driving it not only because what I paid would have fed a third world country for a day (just kidding) but because I couldn’t imagine scratching it. I drove it anyway.

I was overwhelmed with joy as I drove with the hood down, sunglasses on and my arm hanging out the window. My dream came true, 33 years later. I grinned from ear to ear… until the damn thing broke in the middle of traffic. It had to be a flatbed in a place I thought they could work on. I didn’t take into account in all this that the mechanics from the 1970s who worked there were retired or dead.

In short, the car always broke. Sure it looked good at the car shows, but getting there was another story. So one day I made the decision to sell it. I just couldn’t bear to go out to dinner with him and have to take a cab home, especially the day after spending $500 to fix it. On eBay it went, along with all the car trophies and ribbons they show.

The eBay auction went crazy, beyond what I had ever imagined. I actually made a huge profit on the car even after all the service I spent on it. I was actually happier the day I sold it than the day I bought it. I got rid of a headache and made a lot of money. The first question my wife asked me as we watched the Spitty being loaded onto a truck destined for its new owner was “So is this your last Triumph Spitfire?” I replied “probably not”.
