Teaching Fitness Boxing – 5 Simple Technique Cues for Personal Trainers, Coaches and Boxing Trainers
Cues are simple, memorable and colorful words or phrases that will help you teach proper technique for your boxing workouts. For example, Float like a butterfly. Signals are much better than technical jargon because they get the point across on the fly. These pointers will work for personal trainers and group trainers who teach boxing. They will also work for anyone who has punch gloves (focus pads) for their partner.
I – Float like a butterfly
That means – For Ali, I think it meant dancing around the ring, which he did very well. However, for Fitness Boxing, it means getting up on your tiptoes and moving, as long as they aren’t punching.
When and why to say it – Float like a butterfly helps students get up, burn more calories and work their legs. Tell students to do this between punches and combinations, not at the same time.
2. Extinguish the cigarette
That means – This signal means turning the ball of the foot, so that the toe points towards the target, resulting in more hip and leg drive and more powerful punches.
When and why to say it – A good punch uses the core. By rotating the foot, as if you were putting out a cigarette on the floor, the boxer / student will engage the abdominal and core muscles. This tack works great for the right cross punch.
3. On the brick wall
That meanss – This cue helps students keep their elbow high and high for the left or right hook shot. They imagine there is a chest-high brick wall in front of them. The hook goes on the brick wall.
When and why to say it – Say the signal as before or even while throwing the hook. A high elbow helps prevent wild swing on the hook strike.
4. Eye of the tiger
That means – We’ve all heard the song, but to me it means eye of the tiger focus A tiger keeps its eye on its prey, never looking away.
When and why to say this – Pupils will look away or cringe at the moment they poke. Also, in real boxing they will look away when attacked. Now is not the time to look away!
5. Corkscrew the fist
That means – This means twisting the fistso that it faces the ground, allowing the student to strike with both front knuckles.
When and why to say it – This cue works great for both left jab and right cross (or right and left cross for lefties). Tell them to do it twist their fist just before the moment of impact, and directly through the punching glove.
Try these 5 tips while teaching your boxing sessions. They will help your students remember and perform the technical tips that result in a great punch and great fitness.
