Depression, Suicide, Aging, and EQ

There are many myths about aging. For example, do you believe, like many, that “all old people are the same” and that no one changes after the age of 50 or so?

Nothing could be further from the truth. Freud’s famous claim that people could not change after the age of 50 is simply not true. At the time he formed his theories, most people did not live past 50, and this of course shaped his views. Maybe he hasn’t seen many people over 50.

Indeed, this limited exposure to people in older age groups continues to confound our understanding. Many of the available psychological assessments have not been normed with enough people over the age of 60 to make them reliable for people in this age group. It’s all about developmental stages, and you wouldn’t expect “normal” to mean the same to a 75-year-old as it does to a 42-year-old, and any more than it does to a 6-year-old and a 12-year-old.

Older people are not equal as individuals or as a group. Surveys show that the “happiest” people are those aged 60-69, but at the same time, the highest suicide rates of any age group are among those aged 65 and over. 81% of elderly suicides are men and Anglo-Saxon men are particularly vulnerable. White men over 65 have the highest suicide rate, second only to white teenagers. Suicide rates are higher for people who are divorced or widowed, and the cause is attributed first to physical ailments and then to depression.

The percentage of elderly people in the population has increased steadily from 3% in 1900 to 12% today. It is expected to increase to 21% in the next 30 years. Because most emotional problems often present first to a primary care physician, like physical problems (headaches, backaches), medical schools are rushing to add exposure to geriatric medicine and psychology in the training of doctors. Psychology licensing boards are also beginning to require it.

It is important to understand that depression manifests itself in different ways. We usually think of the “lethargic” depressed person, one who moves and thinks slowly, can’t maintain eye contact, talks negatively, is disinterested or unable to enjoy their usual pleasures, and wants to sleep all the time. But depressed people can also be agitated, angry, restless, irritable, squinty-eyed, frantically trying to enjoy things (but can’t), and unable to sleep much.

In any case, women can talk about feelings, but men tend to complain about physical ailments when they see a doctor.

It is important to understand that depression is not a “normal” part of aging and that it is treatable. If you think you are depressed or your loved one is, it’s a good place to start with a physical checkup. You should make a list of all medications that are taken and also take into account the normal routine. Many older people, especially those who live alone, neglect nutrition and exercise.

As I say in my eBook, “EQ and Depression,” you’re not supposed to get depressed as you get older. You’re supposed to feel good. Many older people have a high EQ, are resilient, and have experience. EQ is meant to increase with age, but not if you don’t work at it. Skills such as flexibility, creativity and resilience can be learned and are worth starting to develop in adulthood as they take time to learn. Except for physical problems, you can learn to manage your emotions and the thoughts that accompany and cause them.

We know that isolation is worse for our health than high blood pressure and obesity combined, and not being isolated depends on your interpersonal skills – your ability to make new friends and keep old ones.

Creativity is necessary to learn to work with things that change. It tends to take longer, for example, to learn new things as we age, but many older people are experts in “many ways to skin a cat.” Likewise, there are ways to make short-term memory loss less bothersome. Short-term memory loss is one of the things that comes with aging, but seniors’ vast experience in coping gives them plenty of tricks to pull out of their bag to help them remember .

As one of my senior coaching clients tells me, “My short-term memory is about 10%, but since I used to be well above average, I’m doing well. Now I just write things down, like I’ve seen. others do it for years.”

The ability to face challenges creatively depends on having an optimistic attitude, which can also be learned. I coach people in learned optimism and emotional intelligence skills all the time! If you want to, and are willing to do it, you can learn to change self-limiting beliefs, once you realize they aren’t working for you. It depends on getting the right information (like it’s not “normal” to be depressed at any age, including old age) and then becoming aware of your emotions and talking to yourself and changing them.

Depression usually responds best to a regimen of exercise, good nutrition that includes neutraceuticals, medication, and cognitive work. Coaching can help you move forward, set goals and be accountable to them.

We also know that resilient older adults are lifelong learners. Even though we no longer make more brain cells as adults, we can continue to form new connections throughout life IF we learn new things; the more radical the better. This means that if you are an engineer, take a literature course. If you are a Spanish teacher, study some physics. If you are a left-brained mathematician, take an EQ course and develop the other side of your brain. As someone once said, “fall in love with learning and you’ll never end up broken-hearted.”

Intentionality is a high-order emotional intelligence competency. Why not want to be one of those seniors who are resilient and content, aging gracefully? Look after your well-being now, whatever your age, and don’t neglect your EQ skills. The time to develop them is now.

Our emotions directly affect our immune system, which is our health. They also affect our ability to get along with and enjoy ourselves and others. Men may especially want to address the EQ issue. I know from statistics, and from my coaching practice, that a man living alone at age 60 or older is in a vulnerable position, and even though there are more men than women at that age, intelligent women smart will endure the healthy and intelligent men of EQ to bless with the marital status that promotes health.
