What Are Oligosaccharides?

When we think of sugar, we usually think of that white, granular substance with which we sweeten our desserts and drinks. However, how many of us think of sugar as a carbohydrate? The term oligosaccharide is basically a term for “many” “sugars”. Oligo is formed from the base root of the same word that gives us oligarchy, and saccharide means sugar. This means that the polypeptide chains that make up oligosaccharides range from two to ten sugar molecules, distinguishing them from monosaccharides that have only one molecule and polysaccharides that have many more.

These combinations of sugar molecules give rise to the different oligosaccharides. For example, the sucrose that makes our table sweetener white is basically a combination of glucose and fructose, while lactose, the sugar found in milk, is a combination of glucose and galactose. Maltose is two glucose molecules linked together, and as you can see, by combining different monosaccharides you get your oligosaccharides.

Now, we are all familiar with these different types of sugars. Many of us have heard of lactose because of the intolerance people have. Lactose intolerance usually develops soon after babies are weaned from breast milk, and then must consume lactose-free products because of their digestive system’s inability to create lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose.

Another artificial form of oligosaccharides is high fructose corn syrup. This has recently become a bogeyman and has been blamed for everything from obesity to diabetes. High fructose corn syrup is chemically similar to sucrose in that it is made up of one glucose molecule and one fructose molecule, but the subtle differences between them have made high fructose corn syrup fructose is much worse for your health.

The differences between these sugar molecules are subtle but powerfully expressed. With just glucose, fructose and galactose you can create everything from lactose to sucrose, and it is in understanding these different combinations that the full range of oligosaccharides becomes apparent.
