Breast Pain is Making Me Miserable

Breast lumps are always a concern, especially since breast cancer awareness is so high. Although many lumps are not malignant, as is your case, it is very natural to feel worried.

Breasts are made up of soft tissue, fat, fibrous tissue, and numerous ducts, which come together to form the main tubes that open into the nipples. While you are breastfeeding, the milk produced by the fatty tissue of the breast accumulates in these ducts and the baby sucks it up through the nipples. Lumps, both benign and malignant, are formed by the division of cells in the milk-producing granular tissue or in the tissue lining the ducts. The firm, fibrous breast tissue may also grow and feel lumpy.

A common cause of benign breast lumps is dehydration (not drinking enough water) and/or drinking too much coffee. It is not known exactly how coffee causes the lumps. Many of my patients have found that giving up coffee and drinking more water results in a huge improvement, with less bloating before their periods and no pain or tenderness.

Another common cause is infection. Babies, especially when they are teething, bite the nipples, causing tissue damage. Any infection – from the baby’s mouth or the surrounding area of ​​the breast – passes through the injured skin. Once bacteria enter the sweet milk duct, they multiply rapidly. The original infection leads to an inflammation of the breast called mastitis, which can be very painful. Pus, which is made up of dead cells, can appear from the nipples as the body’s white blood cells – the infection fighters – notice the situation and attack. Large abscesses often form and when these heal, scar tissue is created, which is also a lump.

Benign breast lumps tend to hurt more when the breasts swell before a period. The swelling causes irritation to the nerve endings as they are stretched. Breast tissue swells in response to the production of prolactin, the milk-producing hormone that comes from the pituitary gland. As the prolactin level rises, the breasts swell in readiness to produce milk at the same time that ovulation stops. That is why nursing mothers are usually infertile, nature does not want another pregnancy while the mother is nursing. It is worth checking your blood prolactin levels to see if they are abnormally high and if this is causing breast discomfort.

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is produced by the pituitary gland. Improving blood flow to the pituitary gland by massaging the neck helps to stimulate its functioning and this may help to resolve some of the thyroid problems.

Here is my advice for benign breast lumps:

* Avoid coffee, excess salt and sugar, spicy foods, pickles and canned foods as they cause dehydration.

* Drink 1.5 to 2 liters of filtered still water daily between meals.

* Massage your neck and shoulders twice a week, this will improve blood flow to the pituitary gland, which controls the thyroid and other hormone glands in the body, including the breasts. Massaging the neck and shoulders helps many of my female patients, especially before a period. It helps relieve breast tenderness, which is one of the cardinal symptoms of PMS, and also helps make lumps softer and less painful.

* Massage the breasts, especially the lumps, with cocoa butter, with the thumb and fingers. Do this every day from the middle of the cycle until the period begins; repeat for four cycles.

* Practice yoga to help circulation, especially cobra, boat swing half bridge, and child’s pose. Details can be found in Therapeutic Yoga, the book I wrote with Jiwan Brar.

* Take one aloe vera capsule twice a day for three months.

* Drink a glass of anise tea every morning for two weeks: Boil a teaspoon of anise seeds in a large glass full of water for ten minutes. Allow to cool, add manuka honey to taste and then drink.
