Giving Juice To Your Baby

Fruit Juice for Babies – Sounds healthy enough, right? However, giving your baby juice is not as beneficial as many parents think.

Health organizations around the world, including the American Academy of Paediatrics and the UK Food Standards Agency, recommend that babies do not receive supplementary fluids for the first 6 months of life. This means no juice OR water; only breast milk or formula is sufficient for your baby’s needs. If you give your baby juice before 6 months of age, you may find that it ‘fills them up’. This will cause him to consume less breast milk or formula, depriving him of nutrients that are crucial for healthy growth and development.

Even in older babies, drinking too much juice can be harmful: a baby who consumes juice before a solid meal is very likely to eat less of his food. This means you will consume less essential fats, vitamins, proteins and minerals than your body needs.

Another very important point to consider is that excessive juice intake can cause the body to absorb less carbohydrates; this can sometimes lead to malnutrition.

Fruit juice can also be responsible for cavities, tummy aches and diarrhea in children.

The best option is to offer whole fruit to your baby: nutritionally, it is far superior to juice and contains the fiber that juice lacks. When your baby reaches an age where supplemental fluids are required, offer water! Many parents say that their babies will not accept water; however, if your baby hasn’t yet experienced the sweetness of juice, then he won’t know what he’s missing out on and is more likely to accept water with great joy!

If you still want to include juice in your baby’s diet, you need to make sure that the juice you offer is suitable for a baby.

Avoid juices labeled as “fruit drink”, “fruit drink” or “fruit cocktail” – these are composed of less than 100% juice and often contain added sweeteners and flavors.

Any juice given to a baby must be pasteurized; specially produced ‘baby juices’ are the safest option and contain no sulphites or added sugars.

Always offer juice in a cup, not a bottle; this prevents the fruit sugars in the juice from building up around your baby’s teeth. Give juice only with one meal; do not allow your baby to drink juice non-stop throughout the day.

Finally, limit your baby’s juice intake to 4 to 6 oz per day. This is equivalent to one serving of fruit and is sufficient for the baby’s dietary needs.
