The Differences Between Glitz and Natural Beauty Pageants

This week I got the same question from two different moms whose daughters want to be Miss America one day.

What is the difference between natural beauty pageants and glitter pageants and which one do I recommend?

Both glamor and natural pageants can help girls develop confidence and stage presence in a fun environment; but there are great differences between the splendor and the natural world of the spectacle. To understand where my point is coming from, let me first point out that both girls want to compete in the Miss America system. Second, I am a natural pageant coach who specializes in resume writing, interviewing/communication skills, and positive self-image development.

Natural contests

Pageant systems that fall into this category are National American Miss (NAM), American Coed Pageant (COED), International Junior Miss (IJM), America’s National Teenager (ANTSO), Cinderella, America’s Outstanding Teen, Miss America, Teen-World , Miss USA, Ms. America, Ms. United States and Ms. international There are many more, but this is a sample of systems familiar to people in the pageant world.

  • Generally speaking, the make-up guideline for children under 12 is zero. Some will only allow mascara and lip gloss on stage under the bright light. Makeup used on teenagers and women is to enhance natural beauty, not to become the focal point or to make them look like someone they are not. The same goes for the hairstyle. Always be sure to check with your director about the details of your pageant.
  • The clothes are tasteful and shiny; but it is not excessively ornate. The wardrobe is usually purchased from a store and subtly decorated or customized by the contestant to reflect their sense of personality and style. The wardrobe should always bring attention back to the girl wearing it. Not the other way around.
  • The modeling style of the dress is elegant and soft. Arms and hands are close to your body moving in natural opposition (when you step forward with your right foot, your left arm moves forward and so on).
  • Facial expressions are natural with energy in the eyes and smile.
  • Communication skills are developed through an on-stage introduction, a personal interview and an on-stage question.

Who does well in natural contests? Contestants who like to talk, are skilled in an artistic talent, get good grades, have a charity they are passionate about, and are well-rounded people tend to excel in natural pageants. These skills are easily transferable to life beyond the pageant stage.

Glitz Contest

There are many brilliance contests around the country. If your child is blessed with facial beauty, this may be the place to start. Glitz pageants give young children a chance to get used to being on stage before they can speak.

  • In glitter pageants, you will see the use of hairpieces, heavy makeup, deep tans, false teeth (called fins), false eyelashes, and colored contacts worn by most contestants.
  • The outfit for a pageant of glitter is usually the short cupcake skirt dress. A cupcake dress is a dress that sits several inches above the knee, has multiple layers of lace, and is heavily sequined and bedazzled. Most of the dresses you see on the TV show Toddlers and Tiaras are cupcake dresses and are filmed at glitter pageants.
  • Glitz contests have their own style of modeling. Because of the full cupcake skirt, contestants learn to walk with their hands away from their bodies with their fingertips gently curved around the outer frill of their dress. When they walk, their arms do not move in the natural way of opposition. Instead, they move in the same direction (if you step out with your right foot, your right arm moves slightly with it).
  • Facial expressions tend to be exaggerated with lots of batting, head tilting and kissing.
  • The opportunity to develop oral communication skills is limited to brilliant competitions. If the contestant does speak, it is brief or just to say their name, age and where they are from. This may be because most of the contestants are babies and toddlers whose speech is not yet developed. Again, the focus is on outer beauty.

Who does well in glitter contests? Contestants who enjoy dressing up to create new characters on stage will love glitter contests. The crowns are bigger than the boy’s head and the trophies are twice his height. There are usually lots of prizes too.

Just make sure your child can tolerate having their hair teased, eyelashes glued on, and wearing heavy makeup. Glitz pageants are high maintenance and expensive. They are very popular and easy to find for children under 5.

Because the glitter environment is all about creating an illusion, it is difficult, but not impossible, for children who have only done glitter contests to successfully transition to natural contests as they get older. Modeling style, limited speaking experience, and facial expressions learned at a young age are hard habits to break.

So, to answer the second part of the question about what type of pageant I would recommend, since these two girls want to be Miss America one day (and who doesn’t want to be a 10-year-old girl), I would say follow the systems of natural competitions
