Success Principle – Turning a Deaf Ear to Nay Sayers

“When your determination changes, everything will begin to move in the direction you desire. The moment you decide to be victorious, every nerve and fiber of your being will immediately be geared toward your success.” — Daisaku Ikeda, Japanese author and poet and peace activist

One of the shows my family enjoyed over the summer is America’s Got Talent. I love watching the fun auditions of those who thought they had talent. Apparently, a lot of people thought that being entertaining equals having talent. Hello? You can see someone completely drunk and making fun of them in public. That might be entertaining, but it’s definitely NOT talent on his part.

On the other hand, there are certainly mind-blowing talents. I tend to adore those who are truly talented and at the same time show humility. True talent with a beautiful soul. Donald Braswell is a good example. He is a car salesman who used to be a professional singer. A car accident severed his vocal cords and left him unable to speak. After 11 long years, she finally got her singing voice back, and it was her first time back on stage.

He would never forget his first audition. He was the last in the audition that day. After seeing a series of terrible performances in front of him, the judges and the entire audience were grumpy and restless. When he started singing “You Raise Me Up”, the whole audience was BOOOING him. “That’s AMAZING,” I said to my kids, “How can they be so rude? She has a great voice!” And it sure does. Amazingly, she kept her composure and continued to sing despite the chaos.

Then, something completely unexpected happened. As soon as he hit the high note of the chorus, the whole audience burst into applause! It’s like I suddenly have a completely different audience. They cheered and applauded him with a standing ovation. Even the judges were surprised by such a drastic transformation. Every time I watched that video it brought tears to my eyes.

Donald Braswell turned a deaf ear to the booing audience, stayed in his dream and transformed detractors into his biggest fans.

In life, sometimes we meet people who do not say and who doubt. Maybe they don’t believe in your dream or your ability. Sometimes your friends and family hold you back, because of their worries about you. Often, they tell you it can’t be done, based on their own fears, doubts and limiting beliefs. Regardless of their intent, the problem is that if you accept what they say, you can completely give up on your goals and dreams.

In my own life, I have had to deal with many naysayers, some of whom are my own friends and family. Over the years, I’ve been told many different reasons why I can’t do certain things. I’ve been told I can’t do it, because I’m a woman, a foreigner who doesn’t speak perfect English, too short, not strong enough (take it hard because I’m petite), no. I don’t have the right credentials, I’m not pretty enough, I’m too shy, I’m too dangerous, etc. Some also seem like very “logical” reasons. And almost everyone who told me these reasons said they did it out of concern for me.

Here’s the thing. If I had listened to them, I probably wouldn’t have moved to a foreign country, wouldn’t have started new careers again until I found the person I truly love, earned my black belt and gold medals, m ‘I would have become a keynote speaker, written my book, etc. When I reflect on what I have achieved, it is because I have chosen to turn a deaf ear to those who do not speak. When they say “You can’t”, I say “Just look at me!”

Sometimes you could turn detractors into your fans, like Donald Braswell did. Unfortunately, I’ve found that sometimes your own friends and family are the last to join your dream. Sometimes they wouldn’t even join, despite seeing your success.

So what can you do? You can “upgrade” your friends, but you may not want to “divorce” your family. If this is the case, I suggest that you limit your contact with them so that you are less likely to be negatively affected.

In the meantime, find people who see and support your vision and goals. I have always stressed the importance of having your own “success team” to help you achieve your goals. It is essential to surround yourself with positive people, who believe in you, who support your vision and who can support you and hold you accountable. Joining a mastermind group and/or hiring a professional life coach are two great ways to get this support. If you have a burning desire to make your dream a reality, I can be your partner to help you achieve it!

what is your dream There are many factors that dictate your success, but I would argue that the ability to turn a deaf ear to the naysayers (and believe in yourself) is one of the most critical. When someone says “you can’t”, simply say “thanks for sharing” and take another step towards your dream.
