Master Dental Braces Before They Master You

Wearing braces can be one of the most difficult things you do in life. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. I write this from my heart to anyone who has braces and needs to know how to master them, instead of them mastering you. Braces don’t have to be a hassle, they can actually be fun, if you master a few areas from day one…

I am sure that this letter reaches various age groups, which is my hope and prayer. You see, I’m 41 years old and I felt a little weird getting my braces on. Everyone in the waiting room was between 7 and 25, but my dentist said to get them or don’t wait for my teeth to line up. If you are a kid, I hope you like this article, if you are an adult, I also hope to encourage you to the fullest.

let’s go How to master your braces, instead of them mastering you. A little disclaimer: what worked for me may not work for you, so please follow your dentist or doctor’s directions first, but I will be blunt and to the point to help most you right now .

The best advice I got early on. Relaxed. Relax and try not to think about them being in your mouth. In fact, the dental assistant told me: Don’t think about it. Be yourself and be normal. This was priceless. Because?

The first day I got my braces, I wanted to take them back and tell the doctor to rip them off my face. I even thought about the $4,600 I had to pay (my insurance didn’t cover it because I’m over 25) and I thought how I didn’t even care if I had to pay it, it just keeps this bottom bracket from break my cheeks!

All right. So I’m not trying to scare you, but wearing braces can be difficult if you don’t master them before you master yourself!

First, you need to have fun, laugh, and be yourself like you did before you got your braces. I know, I know, the instructions say “don’t eat sugar, candy, candy, etc., etc., again, follow your dentist’s directions, but I say, use moderation and enjoy your food!

Your teeth will hurt for a while. There are things that are normal that you won’t feel are normal. I already called my dentist and this is all normal believe it or not: teeth moving, being able to touch the teeth and see them move, pain, tightness and more.

My dentist said I should feel back to normal in about a week or two. No way. It took me about a month and a half. After a month, I was starting to feel like my old self and was starting to enjoy my food. Now, about the food. Please don’t make the mistake I did, don’t try to eat with ALL your teeth at once.

I thought, ok, it better be normal, so let’s go ahead and die! Phew! I have so much food stuck to my front teeth you could have filled two gum wrappers with it! don’t bite yourself Do not eat as if your teeth were not affected. Of course, every person is different, but if I could give you this advice. If you used to brush hard, medium brush, if you are a soft brush, good for you. If you were a hard brusher like me, you’ll have to back off a bit!

let me explain I was in a lot of pain the first few weeks just pulling on my bottom teeth. Before I got braces, I just scrubbed and scrubbed. However, the bottom tooth is the crooked one, so I was really cleaning the living daylights out of a moving tooth. It’s not a good thing.

Keep in mind your teeth are moving now, you wouldn’t clean a moving car with a 500 pound sprayer, so don’t do it with your teeth either. You have to be a little more sensitive to yourself.

Again, the first two weeks for me, I wanted to take my braces back to the dentist. Now, I hardly know there. Another thing is prayer. Seriously, pray and ask God for help right now. I’m a Christian, so one day I just prayed this simple prayer and I encourage you to pray it too: “Lord, please teach me how to eat again, with these braces on.”

He heard my prayer and I started eating more with my back teeth. But first, there was peace! God gave me the peace to move forward and I felt moved by Him to stop brushing so hard, and also to eat more with my back teeth. Not to ignore my front teeth, and to chew them too, but just to change them from primary chewers, to secondary chewers, if that makes sense.

The first three weeks for me can be summed up in one word: uncomfortable. Well, I can help you get through it too. I wanted to sit at night and drink my “Welch’s Grape Juice Bars”. Uh oh No way. They were history. They are history for now. Until I get my braces off. It was too cold on my teeth and they all clenched like they were getting ready for war or something.

I’m a juice bar nut, but I like ice cream almost as much as juice bars. Come to find out, ice cream has less fat than some of those juice bars! Anyway, I needed food I could enjoy. Before I tell you my favorite food with braces, let me cheer you up by sharing some of my runners-up. I love to eat creamed corn, ribs that are cooked all the way through, because you can pull them off the bone with your fingers…

A new love! Tapioca pudding! It’s actually an old love, but for the first few weeks it got me through! Also, on the health side: Fig Newtons! Amazing soft food, healthy, and eating them is fun with your braces. Again, though, you need to focus on eating with your back teeth, not your front teeth. Also, put some food on your tongue and let it sit there for a minute, then move it to the back, because you don’t want it to sink into the front wires!

Hmm… let’s see. Other foods you might like: peas, creamed corn, this is satisfying with braces. Also, Chile! Yes, Chile! Do you have a Farmer Boys near you? The best thing you can do for your little one after they get their braces is take them to Farmer Boys for a nice hot bowl of Chili! Farmer Boys makes them with meat, and not so much beans, and the meat is thin, so you’ll be nourished and back to normal in no time! Chili my friends! Chili!

Hmm… what else? Also, soft fruits are excellent. Watermelon, cucumbers and orange slices are amazing with braces.

But remember above all. Everything must be cut! You can’t sit down and eat a cheeseburger! You should cut all your sandwiches into quarters or eighths, make everything bite-sized. You can’t eat too much anymore.

Watch out for nuts! They seem to be the hardest thing to eat with braces. You can eat them once in a while, but let me show you how. Does anyone like chocolate nut clusters? Me too! However, you can NEVER, EVER eat them with your front teeth! You just can’t! Eat them only with your back teeth. Trust me, you’ll thank me later. I tried to eat one for the first three days and almost took the whole thing out in my mouth. Also, if you eat sweets, eat just one! Trust me, one will feel like four with your braces on.

Second, eat slowly, enjoy and chew your food. Never before has chewing been so important! Chew! Chew! Chew! Enjoy! You’ll be glad you did.

Also, lastly, you need to relax and watch the wax! The doctor kept telling me to wax, wax, wax. I have a scientific mind and he told me I was just postponing the inevitable. Those cheek braces are bound to tear and bleed or bruise. So, after using wax for a day or two, I stopped it.

Then, of course, there was the usual pain, but after a day for me, it started to go away. Yeah, yeah, the braces made my cheek bleed and if I run my tongue under my cheek I can feel the scar tissue or whatever, but hey, my cheek has hardened and I don’t need wax anymore. . I’ve been talking to people who got their hair done for months!

Okay, I promised to tell you about my favorite food. It’s vanilla, sorbet or strawberry ice cream. I only eat one or two tablespoons at night three or four times a week because it’s so soothing to my mouth. My mouth started to feel a bit tight at first, but after using it for a day or two, the tightness has subsided and is barely noticeable. Plus, I feel great after having the ice cream because it’s so soothing to my mouth!

Now, again, follow your dentist, but at my first braces checkup, I’m way ahead of schedule. I think I will be getting my braces off in 8 months or less! And that’s ice cream too!

My twisted truth is almost completely straightened out and it’s been less than three months! Also, I wear Damon Braces, they are very comfortable and are a brand new technology that works with the natural movement of your teeth, and they don’t require as much tightening as standard braces! If you are a parent shopping for braces, don’t forget this name!

Finally, if I can do it at 41, so can you. Don’t let braces rule you. You have to master them. And one last word about flossing too. You will NOT be able to floss every day. It’s too hard and you’ll get frustrated. Floss regularly, but most importantly, brush regularly and use lots of mouthwash. It will soothe your mouth! Mouthwash with peroxide! Colgate makes a big one.

Also, my dentist recommends Colgate Total for the best results with braces. Let me tell you why I agree with him. I am a public school teacher of 20 years and once had a sixth grader do an in-depth science experiment comparing Colgate Total, Crest, Agua-Fresh and more. In short, Colgate Total was the best in all areas: less cavities, less cavities, and most importantly, whiter teeth than any other brand.

That student was one of my most intelligent and her research was intense. At the time he was deputy director and judge of a science fair. That said, please enjoy your new braces and remember, be the master of them, before they master you!
