How to "Trick" Your Body into Losing Weight

How do you lose weight? Well, the simple arithmetic of losing weight is simple at first. The bottom line is that if you take in fewer calories than you expend, you should lose weight. And for the most part, the casual dieter can follow this logic and usually end up losing weight. However, what most people don’t understand is that your body is smarter than you are. Here’s how to cheat…

  1. eat more– Yes, you understood me well. When most dieters think that to lose weight they need to not eat so many calories.

True story A few years ago, I was getting frustrated because it seemed like no matter what I did, I couldn’t seem to lose weight fast enough. Instead of quitting, I decided I needed a professional opinion. I went to a personal trainer (who also played one season for the Packers) and he had me write down everything I ate for a week. The next week I went back and he gave me a quick look. He looked me dead in the eye and said, “Leo, you’re not eating enough.” I stayed on the ground. Here I was doing my best to reduce food to the point of depravity. I was trying to lose weight. My body was thinking I was about to starve, and it actually slowed down my metabolism, killing my diet. Obviously, it didn’t mean I could eat more of the junk I was eating. It meant I could eat more Good material….you know, vegetables high in fiber and lean protein.

  2. Eat more often– Again, the traditional thinking is that if you cut back on snacking between meals, you’ll lose weight. However, did you know that eating 6-8 mini meals will not only help you lose weight, but burn more calories in the process? Here’s the real deal. Most of us don’t understand the real work it takes for our bodies to digest food. Yes, that’s right, every time you eat something, you’re making your body do a little work… and that little work will result in more calories burned than if you didn’t eat. It’s called the thermic effect and accounts for 5-10% of the calories burned in a day. Eating more often also works wonders to keep those binges at bay. The reason “grazing” works is because it keeps your blood sugar on an even keel, and the more stable your blood sugar, the less likely you are to reach for that bag of chips for your mid-day snack. Of course, you have to understand that for this to really work, you have to be very careful about what you eat. After all, if your 6-8 meals a day include Big Macs and smoothies, you’re really shooting yourself in the foot. Foods high in protein and fiber tend to be very good items because they make you feel full while not being high in calories.

  3. Choose negative calorie foods for your diet– Almost everyone who is on a diet knows that there are certain foods that you can eat as much as you want. Most diets that are extremely effective focus on these foods. Vegetables like broccoli, asparagus and eggplant and fruits like blueberries and apples are part of these negative calorie foods.

On a side notea friend of mine who just had a baby was trying to let it go baby weight and was looking for some direction. I tried to convince her that there were things she could eat as much as she wanted. These were the foods I was referring to. These negative calorie foods are great because they are high in fiber and high in antioxidants. Plus, adding something like a handful of nuts or some form of lean protein like eggs, chicken, or fish will be enough to satisfy even the pickiest carnivore. Oh, and my friend? She lost all her baby weight in about 2 months.

That’s about it. The trick to successful dieting is to trick your body into thinking that everything is fine and that you’re not starving yourself. Most dieters think that if they starve themselves, they will lose weight. And it works in the short term. But your body will eventually start thinking you’re starving and slow your metabolism (and therefore kill your diet) to a crawl. If you’re starving yourself thinking it’s days away from wearing the dress you wore five years ago, chances are you’ll get frustrated and give up on your diet.

However, by eating often and more importantly, eating the right foods, you can trick your body into burning more calories while eating as much as you want.
