How to Train Your Basset Hound and Keep Your Sanity
In my life, I have trained hundreds of dogs. So when I got my basset hound, I thought this would be a breeze. It was then that I learned how difficult it was to train basset hounds. You see, basset hounds have special qualities that make them adorable but difficult to train. Therefore, I have created four tips to help you train your basset hound.
#1 Don’t take it personally
Bassets were not bread to “please” their owner. This makes them very difficult to train. They are bred to be very loyal, which makes them great pets. They will stay by your side day or night.
So, when training your precious dog, don’t take his unwillingness to learn personally.
#2 Keep it short
Puppies like to smell things and can be easily distracted. If you want to train your puppy, you need to keep the lessons short and sweet. Pick one thing to work on and stick with it.
Remember that lessons should not last more than 5 to 10 minutes at most.
#3 Give it time
As I said before, I have trained many dogs. My golden retriever can learn new things in about three days of training. No matter how complex it is, you can achieve it.
Our basset hound, on the other hand, can take a month to come up with a simple idea. We refer to her lovingly as our special needs dog. It literally took me a month to teach her to lay in bed! However, it only took him a week to learn where to stop for food.
#4 Use food as an incentive
Because Dachshunds love to eat, make the most of the behavior. If you’re trying to teach your basset hound to come, which should be easy, give a small treat for when he comes to you.
In fact, I highly recommend using treats when introducing any new abilities. The smell of the treat will keep your pup intensely engaged. Reward each successful attempt until you know for sure that your dog succeeds. Then start reducing the number of treats slowly.
Training a basset hound is a lot of fun and they can learn. Just give your baby time as they are not the fastest learners.
