A 4th of July Party Idea That Lights Up the Night!
Here’s a fun-filled 4th of July party idea. It’s our family’s favorite summer vacation and always a reason to celebrate. Like an open day, we all invite whoever we see. Everyone brings a plate…we supply the beer, soft drinks and burgers! I’ve said it many times, in our house we don’t focus on food but on fun! There’s always plenty to eat at our parties…but that’s never the focus or what we all remember years later. So go ahead and feel free to recycle our 4th of July party ideas!
Step 1 Invitations? Not with our people. It’s word of mouth and phone calls in this event. We want to save our money for holiday gifts! It seems like everyone stops by after the town parade and picnic. All ages are here, from 8 months to 80! A word of caution. RAIN DATE RAIN DATE RAIN DATE…be sure to tell your friends when you reschedule if it’s pouring!!
Step 2 Decorations: We decorate our front porch with flags, proudly display our flag, and collect red, white, and blue paper goods. Don’t spend more on 4th of July designs! They are much more expensive and the plain colored ones are great for getting everyone in the spirit.
Step 3 Food: It couldn’t be easier. Everyone brings something like an old picnic. We make the burgers and the drinks. Only beer, wine and soft drinks plus tons of water.
Step 4 Party games: always a must! This 4th of July party idea features a game our son and his friends put together…a homemade Frisbee toss…simple but fun. They put 16 oz. water bottles on top of ski poles and threw the Frisbee to try and knock them down! There were lines of all age groups attempting this feat. It wasn’t as easy as it looked, but fun for all. They played it in teams and then had a championship. It was single elimination per player, one try and you faced a new competitor or you’re out! We borrowed some children’s toys from our neighbor and had a pool for the younger crew. One of my friends also painted his face and made the children’s faces. It was great! For younger children, you may want to add a slide or kiddie pool. That would be so much fun for them! Just make sure you have towels to one side to dry them off.
Step 5 This year there are no fireworks but with this 4th of July party idea we have lit up the neighborhood with “illumina Leis”. These were cheap but a lot of fun. Search for “light up leis” and you will find them in many places. Always compare prices, there is a big difference between sites! Everyone was wearing them…even our beloved Wheaton Terrier, Bailey! By 9pm our yard looked like an alien landing zone from afar.
Step 6 More Games How about this for a 4th of July party idea? We had a petanque ball contest at night. We used one of the illuminated leis as a beacon so players could locate the target. Bocce is a fabulous family game. It’s lawn bowling but we play it with a twist. You throw the cue ball (the small target ball) and wherever it lands…you play it. Over the years, throws have landed the target in bushes, under trees, and even across the street. Also, from 5, everyone can play. It is a great bonding game between adults and children. Our kids have been playing with the boys ever since and it’s always a part of any backyard BBQ we have. You can find Bocce at all price levels. Best not to go with the cheapest one.. the balls are too light. Target and Walmart and Sports Authority carry sets. The main set, which we proudly own, comes from Brookstone. It was over $100, but it has lasted over 15 years!
Step 7 The party is over…everyone is still here and it’s after 11…kids running wild, parents and teenagers playing pétanque, mom is exhausted. I’m kicking them all out but it’s been great! “Happy 4th of July everyone and good night everyone!”
