I Was Diagnosed With Metabolic Syndrome and Why I Started Eating Keto
Medical means
I had been eating Medical Medium for several years and considered myself a pescatarian, eating whole plant-based foods and no dairy, meat, poultry, or eggs.
diagnosis
6 weeks ago I decided to go and see a herbalist, Richard Whelan, I had wanted to see him for years but I don’t think I was ready to face what he might say about my health. My goal was to control my high blood pressure, and I was recently diagnosed with high cholesterol.
Well, I was kind of surprised, he did a few blood tests, pricking my finger and running it through machines and looking at it under a microscope. Listening to my heartbeat and taking my blood pressure.
He said as soon as he saw me he knew I had metabolic syndrome, which is a combination of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and carrying weight around the midsection that is so stubborn that no matter what you try, it won’t change. . And he had tried so hard, besides exercising. Nothing changed these figures.
He said it wasn’t a case of if I have diabetes, but when. I considered myself pre-diabetic.
Stunned, I muttered that I seemed to eat very well and healthily, that I liked refined sugar but, for the most part, I wasn’t out of control.
So she gave me some herbs for my liver and other vitamins and herbs to take, magnesium acetate, chromium, b complex, milk thistle and hawthorn and reishi
Keto
Then he said he wanted me to eat Keto.
I was like “Keto????” what????
I was horrified, I said Keto is what threw my thyroid off 4 years ago, going low carb.
So he asked me what I was willing to do, I said I was willing to look into it. And he was happy about it.
Thyroid and Keto
So I started researching solidly for about a week. He had suggested I sign up for dietdoctor.com, which I did.
And I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why keto wasn’t throwing my thyroid back like it had.
Then I started to figure out why it happened.
I have been eating raw keto. Basically, you only eat all fatty foods like sausages and bacon, meat and eggs, and none of the vegetables.
I had a good time exploring vegan keto and decided it would be too difficult.
So I brought in meat, eggs, and other foods, and threw out most of the things in my cupboards that were higher in carbs. It was very hard to throw away my old foods that I thought were healthy.
What I’ve found, though, is that these foods are healthy for some people, just as keto doesn’t work for everyone.
Stomach upset
So, I felt like I was doing pretty well the first few weeks, I went into the keto flu stage while my body was adjusting, then the diarrhea hit.
I stopped all my vitamins and herbs. After 10 days I went back to my old way of eating to see if maybe it was the fat, maybe I had changed my diet too fast instead of adding food slowly.
I tracked food and was about to make a request with my doctor when I got good.
So I’m fine for a week and this past weekend it started again. I dissected what I had been eating and was finally able to figure out what was causing it, because I was going to suck if it was the fats.
It was sucralose. The sweetener that was in the powerade zero I was using for electrolytes when I was feeling the keto flu. It was a vicious cycle, because I would think I should replace electrolytes because of the diarrhea and then drink more.
Moving forward
I hadn’t weighed myself in a few weeks but I was starting to lose weight steadily and this morning I measured my waist and I have lost 15.5 cm in a month.
I really enjoy eating keto. It’s very filling. I have introduced some dairy but not much. I’m eating mostly chicken, some meat and eggs. But this time I’m eating a lot more vegetables than last time.
I had blood work done a few weeks ago and my thyroid is in range and my liver results are also in range which I have not seen in the 4 years I have been doing blood work.
I’ll let you know how I’m doing from time to time.
Postscript: 5 months after starting keto, I started having anxiety and had a blood test. Sure enough, what I feared would happen, I am in the early stages of hyperthyroidism, have increased my carbs and have an appointment to see Richard in early February 2021. I have lost 12kg.
