Aspirin For Dogs – Is it Safe?

Aspirin works to control pain and inflammation in dogs just as it does in humans. But did you know that more than 40,000 people die each year from complications associated with taking aspirin? Aspirin for dogs can cause many of the same types of problems that dog owners should be aware of.

Most problems experienced by dogs taking aspirin have to do with infections of the digestive tract. These can be quite dangerous, as the following story demonstrates.

My old dog, Storm, had developed a severe case of arthritis when he was older. The vet suggested that we give him a low dose aspirin daily for his arthritis. This would not only relieve your joint pain but also act as an anti-inflammatory for your joint disease.

We start giving Storm aspirin for her dog’s arthritis. It seemed to give him a lot of relief and we were happy for him. He was a big dog and we give him a covered aspirin every day. Everything went well for about 2 weeks. Then one day he suddenly became very ill. It never occurred to us that the canine aspirin we were giving him could be the problem.

I actually thought, because of his old age, that something important had happened. Maybe he was having a stroke or something even worse. By all appearances, he was down and dying. I was about 14 at the time. We lived about an hour from the vet and it was so bad I didn’t think I would make the trip. We knew he had been in a lot of trouble the past few months and we wanted to have him here with us and his “friends” if this was the end…which it looked like it was.

Again, the canine aspirin we were giving him was never considered. But after about 8 hours, he started looking and acting better. The next day he was much better. It was almost like a miracle. I guess it wasn’t his time yet.

Later, I pieced together several things I had seen happen to Storm during the week we gave her the aspirin. I had noticed that his poop was very dark sometimes. I didn’t know, but the dark poop may mean that the aspirin had caused an infection so bad that it was causing bleeding in her intestinal tract. Blood can cause a dog’s poop to turn dark and even black.

We then stopped giving Storm aspirin on a regular basis. We continued, however, to give it only day by day. We would never give a dog aspirin for more than 2 days a week. If you follow this plan, there is little chance of developing an aspirin infection. Dogs can benefit from aspirin just like humans. However, owners should be aware of the dangers of dog aspirin.

Always watch your dog’s poop to make sure it looks normal when you give aspirin. If there is any color change, stop giving your dog the aspirin. Also, try to save the aspirin only for the days your dog is having the most trouble or seems to be in the most pain.
