Caring For Goldfish From the Carnival For About $50

This article is for anyone who has won a goldfish at a carnival and needs some basic care requirements. A typical scenario is that you, your child, friend, girlfriend or family member won a goldfish in the game of “throw a ping pong ball into a small bowl of water” at the carnival, and now you are the proud owner of a goldfish The next step is knowing how to take care of it. Most people will fill a glass bowl full of water and throw the fish in. This is the way I started about 2 decades ago, but there are easier ways to greatly increase your chances of success and minimize your financial losses.

The first step is to find a container preferably a 10-20 gallon aquarium for your fish. If you go with something smaller, like a 5 gallon tank, it will actually create more problems as it is harder to keep the water chemistry stable. If you only have one goldfish, you will most likely get more goldfish, “friends”, so plan ahead and start with a 10-20 gallon tank. Just make sure when you buy it, fill it outside on a few pieces of newspaper, let it sit for 24 hours and make sure the newspaper stays dry. If not, it means there is a leak somewhere and try to get your money back!

Second, a filter is in order, so we’ll go with the most tried and true filter, the undergravel filter. If you choose to go without a filter, you will create more work for yourself. Without a filter, you will probably need to change the water in the tank every week. Here’s what it will look like:

If you go with the first step, you will have a 10-20 gallon tank and it will be filled with water. You will need to empty the tank, remove the fish and put it in another container (like a pickle jar) and take the tank outside and clean it with the garden hose.

Not only is this a lot of work, but it also destroys any biological bacteria living in the gravel, so essentially the tank will never have a chance to heal properly and the fish will eventually tire and die. If you don’t like that, go with the gravel filter. It is cheap, energy efficient and extremely reliable because there are really no moving parts. All it takes is an air pump and gravel to make it work properly.

To install the filter, place the plastic plates on the bottom of the tank. Place the tubes provided in the plates and install the overhead lines into the tubes. Put gravel on top of the plates (you’ll want about 2-3″ of gravel on top of the plates), fill the tank with water and don’t forget to dechlorinate the water. Fortunately, goldfish are cold water fish, so they do. It does not require a heater. With the gravel filter installed, the air pump attached and the tank filled with water, you are ready to keep your precious goldfish.

Let’s talk a little bit about tank placement. First of all, as tempting as it may be to place the tank next to the window to let in some sunlight, which by the way improves the color of the fish, it is not a good idea. Sunlight, excess food and fish poop are the main ingredients needed to create an algae bloom. On the 1st the tank will look stellar, but on the 21st it will look like pea soup, so save yourself the trouble and keep the tank out of the sun. Also keep it away from entrances because the cold/heat can cause the water temperature to fluctuate to the point where the fish become stressed and have the potential to get sick.

In addition to maintaining a stable temperature, healthy goldfish, like any living thing, need proper nutrition. Any basic goldfish flake food from the pet store will work just fine. Make sure you don’t overfeed them. After a while they will start to recognize the shapes, so don’t get confused with “I’m hungry”. Resist the temptation to feed every hour. Feed them once a day as much as they eat in about 30 seconds. So this is a quick overview of the basic care requirements of keeping a goldfish. Now let’s see how much this “free” goldfish will actually cost.

  • 10 gallon tank. $20
  • Filter under gravel. $6
  • air pump $10
  • record $10
  • Dechlorinator, net, plants, etc. $10

Total $56

These steps will get you going in the right direction and you will be on your way to fish farming success. So in review:

1. A 10-20 gallon aquarium is a good starting size for goldfish.

2. Put the gravel filter on and connect the air pump.

3. Place about 2-3″ of gravel on top of the gravel filter plates.

4. Fill the tank with water and use a good dechlorinator (not too much)

5. Feed the fish only what they can eat in 30 seconds.

Following these steps will greatly improve your chances of keeping your fish alive and healthy. Take it from someone who’s been there, changing a goldfish’s water every week gets really old really fast. A filter aquarium is worth every penny when it comes to raising fish.
