5 Things to Know While Keeping Chinchillas As Pets
They’re small, they’re cute, and they’re incredibly popular as pets. You should really consider them the next time you’re thinking about buying a pet.
We are talking about chinchillas from South America. Chinchillas are cute-looking rodents known for their soft fur and curious, exuberant nature. These small rodents make great pets as they require very little maintenance. These little ones don’t weigh too much and don’t make noises that could disturb them.
However, below are 5 important things to know when keeping chinchillas as pets. Reading the following five points will help you learn more about these rodents and decide if you want one. After all, deciding what you want to keep as a pet is not easy and it is always a good idea to review the information. Having an exotic pet like a chinchilla will also make you the envy of the neighbors for sure. After all, not many around you have a chinchilla as a pet, right?
1. These little pets have a lifespan of 12-20 years. They weigh only between 1.1 and 1.5 kg. They are about 12-14 inches long and have a tail about 4-6 inches long. These are larger than ground squirrels and smaller than rabbits.
2. Chinchillas are quite active and female rodents are also known to be aggressive, especially with same-sex chinchillas. Females mature when they are 7 months old. They have a gestation period of 111 days and can have 1-2 babies per litter.
3. It is recommended to keep chinchillas in a cage. If they are kept outdoors, they may end up chewing on whatever they find.
4. Chinchillas need a good amount of forage in their diet. Therefore, green grass is the best food for them. Apart from the occasional treats can be given. These rodents are crepuscular in nature, that is to say; they are most active during dusk and dawn. Care must be taken to feed them according to their habits. Treats can be given once a day, however, too much is not recommended as their digestive system cannot assimilate too much sugar.
5. Chinchillas are sometimes seen biting their fur; this could result due to poor nutrition, boredom, stressful conditions or too much noise around.
It must be remembered that a chinchilla must be handled with care. Gentle handling and attention to the pet will soon tame it.
