Acupuncture for Longevity
Linda Yamamoto is an 84-year-old Japanese-American woman who received acupuncture from the Boston Acupuncture Clinic for the past 9 years. She stayed home until her youngest son went to high school. He then started working for the government as an accountant. She has been very social, active and happy. He donated money to a foundation to help Asian college students in need. He does not travel much, giving him time to participate in many types of social activities in the Boston area. Her husband drives her. She gets angry when her husband forgets to pick her up and rarely complains.
Good genes do not guarantee good health
Linda inherited good genes from her mother, who lived to be 98 without any health insurance. But these good genes do not protect Linda from the disease. She developed hypothyroidism in her 40s after giving birth to her third child. She started taking Synthroid for her thyroid disease. After a few years on thyroid medication, she developed atrial fibrillation (AF). He then took a β-blocker and two other medications for his heart condition. Her heartbeats slowed with the medication, but never returned to normal.
HRT (hormone replacement therapy) treatment brought dreams to many postmenopausal women. They thought they could get their youth back by taking this magic pill. Linda tried it at age 68 only to see her period return a year later. She thought it was unnatural and stopped the hormone pill immediately. Her good genes could not protect her in modern society. Linda developed breast cancer at age 70 after taking hormone supplements for a year. She had surgery and radiation therapy, but did not take tamoxifen to block her estrogen receptors, thus preserving her muscle strength.
In her 80s, she quit working for the government because she realized the stress was too much for her. He spent more time at social events. He always sleeps eight hours no matter what time he goes to bed. When he went to sleep after midnight, his heartbeat became irregular and his digestion became poor. For a while, he attended many social events in the evening and had dinner after 7 pm. During this time, his heartbeat was irregular even though he was taking three medications for his conditions. I advised her to stop drinking coffee, eat dinner before 7pm and go to bed before midnight.
Get back on track with a disciplined healthy routine
Linda changed her habits. Heart condition and digestion have been improving for the past two years. He went to his cardiologist for routine checkups and eventually stopped taking all his heart medications at age 87. Linda continues to come to see me for facial rejuvenation with acupuncture. Her heart rate is between 55 and 65 without any heart medication. Also, since going off her meds, the coldness of her hands and feet has lessened and they don’t turn very pale during the winter.
With his heart condition improved, he began personal training at a gym to tone his muscles. When he started lifting weights three times a week, he developed pain in his knee and hip. But because she eats healthy, she didn’t have any systemic inflammation, and her muscle pains eased with just one or two acupuncture treatments. With acupuncture and exercises, her joint pains and Raynaud’s syndrome no longer bother her. Her face looks like a 50-year-old woman; he still has a good memory and never forgets to pay his bills on time. She is still cooking, cleaning and living in her own home.
In 2016, Linda fell in the bathtub and fractured her thoracic vertebrae and shrank several centimeters. He was so sad that he might never be able to continue with his acupuncture facial rejuvenation. Since Linda has been exercising all her life, she was able to recover from the bad fall in 2 months. She returned for her routine acupuncture 3 months after the fall and told me she had developed more wrinkles on one side of her face. When we met in the waiting room, she said she would like me to use acupuncture to reduce those wrinkles. Some of my patients, who were in the waiting room, were very impressed with their facial skin and muscle tone. They thought he was 60 when he was actually 93.
