The History of Formula Milk

The term “formula” derives from Thomas Morgan Botch’s approach to “percentage feeding”. He coined the term when he was trying to come up with the best mix of the different components that make up baby formula. A common basic formula, at the time, at Boston Children’s Hospital was 2-6-2, meaning 2% fat, 6% carbohydrates, and 2% protein. During the 20th century many commercial companies have strived to improve milk formula. Franklin Infant Food introduced in 1923 was a powdered formulation, which would later be called Similac. Mead Johnson’s Enfamil was a latecomer in 1959, but the company, established in 1905, pioneered vitamin research in the 1920s with the first standardized strength cod liver oil in 1924 and a solution pure vitamin D in 1929.
