Having a baby changes your life. Not only will your world change when the baby arrives, but your body will too. It can be quite difficult to adjust to your new body shape during pregnancy, but it can have a much bigger impact on you once the baby is born. Chances are you’re bigger than ever and it can be a real shock: your belly takes ages to settle and shrink and you don’t know how to lose weight after having a baby. You wonder if your body will ever be the same again, or if you’re destined to suffer from the remaining scars and sagging of pregnancy.

It doesn’t help to be surrounded by newspapers with the latest celebrity mom who slimmed down to her original weight in 1 week! However, the reality is that pregnancy affects every part of you and it can take up to a whole year to recover. Celebrities also have plenty of fitness gurus and expert dietitians around them to help them recover quickly (although “quick” recovery may not be in the best interest of your health).

So how do you lose weight after having a baby? First, you need to take it slow. Enjoy the first month or so with your baby and worry about your weight later. When you feel like exercising, start! Start very lightly: Low-impact exercise is the best way to start. This might involve going for a walk (with your baby in a sling or stroller) or some light yoga. It’s very easy to get back into exercise if you do it slowly. If you don’t, you can overdo it, damaging your health and leaving you frustrated. You need to be easy on your body – not only has it been carrying a baby for 9 months, but you’ve also given birth! Your body needs time to heal.

Nutrition is also important when it comes to losing baby weight, especially if you are breastfeeding. You need to make sure you are getting enough calories to have a good milk supply and a quality milk supply. Breastfeeding will also help you lose baby weight, as your body burns an extra 500 calories a day because of it! If you’re not breastfeeding, it will make it a little more difficult to shift the baby’s weight, but you can still do it easily. The most important thing to remember is to have nutritious meals. This can be difficult if you have no idea about nutrition, or just don’t have the time, which you won’t have if you’re a new mom! So your best bet is to find the right program that does the nutrition thinking for you and lets you just follow it into your life. This is what I did and it allowed me to get on with other things like caring for my newborn!
