Blacksmithing Tips – What Type of Power Hammer is Right For Your Shop?

Blacksmith hammers or travel hammers

If you’ve ever worked with an electric hammer, you see the world of blacksmithing through different eyes. Electric hammers fall into 3 basic categories, hydraulic presses, mechanical hammers and air hammers. They are all designed to increase the amount of force you can apply to the steel. This means you can do more work in a given amount of time and you can work bigger. Suddenly this opens up a whole new creative reality with steel.

Hydraulic presses

I don’t use one in my shop, but I used one a year ago at another blacksmith shop. Hydraulics have tons of power (literally) and can force metal into many different shapes very efficiently. They are useful for extreme controlled force applications such as forcing steel into preformed dies, or cutting to specific lengths or angles, etc.

It is not an impact machine like mechanical hammers or air hammers, and is not fast. It can be used to stretch steel, but this is tedious. Although it saves time drawing by hand and allows you to work a larger bar, I would go crazy with the slow process.

The machine is basically a hydraulic cylinder mounted on a frame with an electric pump. You use a pedal to crush the metal. Step with the foot apply more force. Release the foot, the dies move back, then you can move the bar and apply the force again in a different place.

There are a few positive aspects of a hydraulic press. They have a small footprint and do not require any special foundation. Prices are reasonable for this type of tool. About $2000.00 in my area. There is no impact noise or vibration with this type of machine. The whine of the hydraulic pump can be loud but it doesn’t have the same annoyance factor for neighbors as the impact of a hammer. Presses are rated by the number of tons of pressure the ram can produce. 20 tons, 40 tons and 60 tons are common sizes.

All mechanical hammers operate on some variation of the same principle. A rotating crankshaft lifts the weighted hammerhead which is counterbalanced, then forces it down over the next half of the revolution. The mounting on the other hammer head should be of some spring construction so that the impact is absorbed by the spring and not the crankshaft. The counterweight relieves some of the strain on the engine.

There have been many different configurations of mechanical hammers over the years. Little Giant comes to mind but that’s just a style. Others include Helve hammers, etc. Mechanical hammers are rated on the head rate of the hammer. So a 25 pound little giant has a hammer head weight of 25 pounds. The heavier the head weight, the bigger the steel you can work underneath, but the bigger the motor you need to run it.

Something to think about. If your store is outdoors but has no electricity, you can run a mechanical hammer on a small gas engine. A bit pricey but compared to the amount of work you could do this way, it might be worth it.

I’ve only worked a little with mechanical hammers, but a 1 hp motor can achieve a hammer head weight of around 50 lbs.

The beauty of a mechanical hammer is that it is relatively simple to build or repair. The movement concepts are very simple and easy to follow in slow motion. Mechanical hammers were relatively common in industrial settings in the late 1800s and early 1900s, so you may be able to find one at a good price in your area. The downside is that the parts may be impossible to find and you may have to craft your own.

You can also build your own mechanical hammer. It will take a bit of tinkering, but a good working hammer can be made quite inexpensively. They don’t take up much space. Maybe 2 feet by 3 feet for a little one. They are a bit noisy to run and have impact noise. They need a good foundation, although a little one can get by with a little foundation. They are somewhat limited by the tasks you can do with them. If you get creative with your tooling, you can still do a lot of work and save your arm.

Pneumatic hammers

My favorite. The air hammer was originally designed as a steam hammer for huge industrial applications. Like mechanical hammers, they are rated on the mass of the hammer head and typically range from 50 lbs to 1200 lbs or more. The upper end of the scale is made up of massive machines that require gigantic foundations to function properly. They are poetry in motion to watch a skilled blacksmith use.

The principle behind the air hammer is quite simple. The air pressure lifts a weighted hammerhead, then something changes the air pressure and the hammerhead falls under the force of the air pressure, then it is lifted again. The air at the bottom of the pneumatic cylinder acts like a cushion replacing the springs in a mechanical hammer. This process creates a cyclic hammering of the steel. The weight of the hammerhead and air pressure both contribute to the force applied to the steel.

Most small blacksmith shops use a 50 lb to 150 lb size. There are two subclasses of air hammers you should be aware of. The standalone version and the air compressor version. The autonomous uses two bottles of air. One is the compressor cylinder and is driven by a motor. This cylinder supplies air to the hammer head cylinder. Thus, each upstroke of the drive cylinder forces the hammerhead cylinder down and each downstroke forces the hammerhead cylinder up. The valve causes air to escape or be sent in varying amounts to the cylinder of the hammer head. This controls the stroke and force applied to the steel. This cyclic synchronization is governed by the speed of the electric motor.

The air compressor dependent air hammer feeds on constant line pressure and has feedback circuitry built into the design. The hammer head moves up and triggers a switch that tells it to come back down. Once it reaches a certain point of movement, another switch tells it to move up. The amount of exhaust dictates both the speed and the force applied to the steel.

Although air hammers seem to be a bit more complicated than a mechanical hammer, there are actually fewer moving parts and less wear. I find them more versatile. You can adjust your stroke and force simply by moderating your pedal. With a mechanical hammer, you have to make a mechanical adjustment to change the strike height. Your force is controlled by the speed of the impact or the speed of rotation.
