Soon I Will Be Dead: Where Do I Go From Here?

84 years old.

Soon I will be dead.

Where do I go from here?

I just celebrated my eighty-third birthday. It’s time to start thinking about the inevitable. I read the obituaries every day and I realize that, little by little, I am surpassing all the people who are registered there. I guess I’m getting old.

What do you mean by getting old, Carl?

You walked past a cemetery the other day and two guys chased you with a shovel!

You no longer buy green bananas!

You are old!

Come on Carl, stop being stupid.

OK. OK. Let’s move on… Since the dawn of time, men have wondered about the afterlife. Does it exist? Is there a place we go after we die? Is there a paradise? How is? Do we have wings? Are we floating on a cloud? What about hell? Do we shovel coal in an eternal fire?

Shakespeare wonders in his famous soliloquy, “To be or not to be”…. To die, to sleep… no more… and by sleeping to say finished are the sorrows and the thousand natural shocks that the flesh is heir to? ‘Tis a consummation longing to wish.

To die… to sleep… to sleep perhaps to dream? Ay! That’s the catch!”

Ancient Egyptians, Indians, countless religions prepare all their loved ones for the final journey in many ritual ways.

This is the great mystery. We don’t want our lives to end,

Maybe that’s why we tend to avoid using the word die.

I once wrote a poem called “Let’s face it.”

Didn’t you notice? Open your eyes.

Nowadays, no one dies.

When we get old, weak and gray

And our heart stops. We have just died.

Why our friends sigh and cry and cry

If in fact, we have just gone to bed?

Go on. Face it. Try.

Angels don’t take us,

We die.

Well, that’s kind of definitive and not what I choose to believe now.

Why? I come back to the argument I used in my last column.

People far smarter and more respected than me believe there is life after.

Why shouldn’t I?

Moreover, the God whom I adore and in whom I trust has promised it to me.

So, I look forward to it as a great adventure.

I don’t believe there is anything to be afraid of. Think about it. If we can survive birth, why not death? We are so well in the womb of our Mother. It is warm and safe. We are fed. No problems… No taxes… No politics… No rent to pay… Suddenly… Wham! We are propelled into the world. Someone taps us on the buttocks. We cry. We are hungry and cold. Now we have to fight to survive. Dying must be a little better than that. God requires faith and that is what we need. It’s a better place.

Sometimes we are blessed with a sign. I want to share a personal experience that is true. You can choose whether or not to believe it.

My Mother, bless her, passed away more than 25 years ago. She was very ill in a hospital in Florida and I came downstairs to be with her. I stayed there for almost two weeks and had to go back to work. She was still stubbornly among us. So my brother and my sisters left me alone to say goodbye before taking me to the airport. I held his hand and said, “Just think mommy, soon you’ll be with daddy and everyone you love.”

“Do you really think that?” She answered. When I said yes, she sighed and said, “Well, that’s not going to be nice!” Then she closed her eyes and fell asleep. I thought it would be a good time to leave. Those were the last words I heard him say. “Well, that’s not going to be nice!”

A few days later I got the bad news and went back for the funeral.

A few years ago I received a phone call from a lady. She told me that she came to see me and we discussed that she had psychic abilities and sometimes communicated with dead people. I didn’t remember her.

So, I was very suspicious when she said, “I am contacting you because your mother came to me in a dream and asked me to call you and tell you that you should take better care of yourself. hard and should go for a check-up.”

I wondered what she really wanted when she said, “Also, to make sure and tell you, yes, that’s really nice”… I was surprised because I hadn’t spoken to anyone of that last conversation. It was a private memory.

So, I believe I have been blessed with a sign that I pass on to others.

Don’t forget that I am 84 years old. I don’t lie anymore.

In my practice, I see people who find it difficult to grieve. I tell them that they should give themselves the right. Grieving does not end at the funeral. We don’t run a race and we stop at the finish line. But, I remind them that they mourn the loss they suffer. That the people we love and miss are in a better place and we are meant to be there with them one day.

People worry about whether they will be admitted to heaven. They are overwhelmed with guilt. Remember, God is a loving father. He is patient and forgiving. No need to worry. He will forgive you and welcome you.

Back to stupidity:

We have only two things to worry about.

Are we okay or will we get sick?

If we are well, we have nothing to fear.

If we get sick, we only have two things to worry about.

Will we live or will we die?

If we live, we have nothing to fear.

If we die, we will only have two things to fear.

Are we going to heaven or hell.

If we go to heaven, we have nothing to fear.

If we go to hell

We’ll be so busy saying hello to our friends,

We will have nothing to fear!

Sorry! Back to serious.

Since we are finite in nature, the concept of eternity is very difficult for us to understand.

A woman once said to me, “How could there be a paradise? Where would they put all the millions of people who died? There wouldn’t be enough room!

I asked her if she had ever looked at the stars on a clear, dark night.

A man once said, “I don’t think I want to live forever. It would be very boring. What he didn’t realize was that eternity is an eternal now. It’s not many days, weeks and years. It is an eternal moment. It is very difficult for us to imagine. That is why it is a great mystery and an adventure. Something to look forward to.

Do not mistake yourself. I’m not in a hurry.

I have,

“Kilometres to travel before sleeping and promises to keep”.

PS This all reminds me of a joke and people who know me will tell you that I love telling a joke. So maybe I’ll leave you with a smile.

Abe dies and misses his wife Becky. She decides to do a session. She’s sitting at a round table with her friends in the dark, just a lit candle. They are holding each other’s hand. Suddenly, she hears… “Becky!” Becky!

“Abe, is that you?”

“Yes, Becky, it’s me, Abe”

“Abbe, how are you? Are you happy ?

“Oh yes Becky. I am very happy. All cows! All the beautiful cows!

“Abe, do they have cows in heaven?”

“What a sky… I’m in Argentina. I came back like a bull!”
