Keep Sex Over the Top, Not Over the Hill

Something’s Gotta Give, starring Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton, both in their 60s, may have done more for the egos and sex lives of “mature lovers” than Viagra, Cialis or Levitra!

The scene where they have sex for the first time is both hilarious and touching and speaks to the issues over 50 people face with their sexuality. He just had a heart attack and she, divorced for years, hasn’t had sex in “a very long time”. Although their sexual performance was more comedic than erotic, it was offset by their endearing emotional desire for each other and the confidence the experience gave them. She learns that she still enjoys sex very much and he then finds himself crying, surprised and deeply touched by his second life.

In the film, Diane’s character laments that she thought her sex life was permanently “out of business.” I have several patients over the age of 55 who are also worried that their personal shop will be closed because they don’t seem to be going there much anymore. Do you feel like this?

As I tell my patients, sex was meant to be a healthy part of your life for as long as you wanted it. So let’s talk about some ways to maintain a vibrant sex life well into your advanced years! First, let me turn to men and talk about a common problem for men over 50, erectile dysfunction, and how it impacts your sexuality.

Do you really need any of these drugs?

We have entered a culture that pushes drugs on television. More and more of my “older” male patients see the TV commercials for Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, think it’s the magic bullet, and ask me for a prescription. However, I would rather recommend that my patients try some natural erectile dysfunction remedies first, such as the following:

Exercise: Many cases of erectile dysfunction occur due to decreased blood supply to the lower half of the body. Try doing aerobic exercise that primarily uses your legs such as biking, hiking, walking, golf, tennis, for at least 30-45 minutes, 4 times a week to increase blood flow to your lower half .

Poor nutrition/low testosterone: A diet low in zinc, protein, vitamin E and, surprisingly, cholesterol, can decrease testosterone levels which can worsen erectile dysfunction. Fats help make testosterone via cholesterol. A healthy level of testosterone boosting is around 30-40 grams of fat per day! Studies show that diets high in protein and simple sugar also help build testosterone. Aim for at least 0.5 grams of protein for every pound of body weight. Additionally, supplements like Royal Maca contain natural plant sterols that boost testosterone and increase sperm levels in men. Stay away from soy as it contains plant estrogen which can decrease testosterone and worsen erectile dysfunction. If you have eaten soy, chrysin, a bioflavonoid, will help remove estrogen from your system.

Mental Health: Emotional problems can also cause erectile dysfunction. If you’re carrying around a lot of stress, which can be common these days, your sex life can suffocate under its weight. Sharing your feelings with an objective friend or advisor can give you a different perspective on things. It can really help you straighten up mentally and physically.

Diseases: Diabetes, coronary artery disease (CAD) or prostate disease can cause erectile difficulties. In diabetes and coronary artery disease, decreased blood flow is a problem that may improve with exercise. Drugs that lower testosterone used to treat prostate disease can also contribute to erectile dysfunction.

Alcohol/Drugs: If you drink too much alcohol, it can also make erectile dysfunction worse. If you drink more than 2 drinks a day, 7 days a week, or if you drink or party on the weekends, that’s too much. Likewise, many prescription medications can make erectile dysfunction worse, especially blood pressure medications. Ask your doctor if the medications you are taking are absolutely necessary and/or if the dosage could be reduced. Other substances such as marijuana can also contribute to erectile dysfunction. Now I would like to talk to women over 50.

Does menopause put your sex life on hold?

As I tell my male patients with menopausal wives or girlfriends, menopause can add a whole new dimension to sexual issues in relationships over 50. Menopause can usher in a wave of insecurity about their femininity. They may see drier hair and skin, sagging muscles, weight gain, and may simply not feel as attractive as they once did.

Also, as a woman ages, the vaginal tissues undergo physical changes due to the decrease in estrogen. The walls become thinner and the tissues less resistant. They may also experience vaginal dryness which can cause burning inflammation that causes serious discomfort during sex.

Postmenopausal women may have trouble sleeping due to hormonal changes and may not have the same physical energy for sex that they had before. However, there are some natural things women can do to help regain their youthful attractiveness and libido.

Nutritional support: Declining estrogen levels can show up in how a woman looks and feels. Women don’t feel sexy if they don’t feel good or if they don’t feel good! Menopause requires a lot more vitamins and minerals to do the job of decreasing estrogen levels. Some menopause superstars are:

Fish oil and super evening primrose oil – both at 1000mg per day – helps with general dryness.

Powerful vitamin/mineral formula – should contain all B vitamins, vitamin D, vitamin C and important antioxidants like selenium. It should also contain boron, a trace element, which postmenopausal women are generally deficient in.

Calcium, zinc and magnesium – 1200 mg combination per day. Helps keep your bones strong, decreases muscle tension and hot flashes.

Resveratrol (an antioxidant, anti-aging agent) – can help slow aging at the cellular level and boost your heart function with the side effect of smoothing your skin.

Protein and biotin – keep muscles strong and hair, nails and skin alive by eating enough protein. Like men, women’s muscles shrink due to lack of protein and lack of strengthening exercises. The skin covering the muscle loosens, sags and wrinkles. Same for men, 0.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight. If you weigh 180, 90 grams of protein is your daily goal.

Water – dehydration is common in men and women over the age of 50. Your skin becomes drier and less supple, wrinkles more; contributes to vaginal dryness and decreases the production of seminal fluid in men. It can also cause serious mineral imbalances that can disrupt heart rhythms.

Vaginal dryness: There are several commercial products that address this problem. Natural products include Vitamin E 1000mg Soft Gel and Extra Virgin Olive Oil, both of which can be inserted vaginally. Both decrease inflammation and normalize pH in the vaginal tract. The Royal Maca supplement also works its magic on women! This not only helps relieve vaginal dryness, but can also increase your libido. South Sea women have used it for years as a menopause remedy.

Hormone replacement therapy: Some women benefit greatly from replacing biased estrogen and progesterone at menopause. They can relieve vaginal dryness, night sweats, hot flashes, and a host of other ailments that women don’t need to suffer from. If menopause is just too abrupt, see your doctor about bioidentical hormone replacement, which I highly recommend. It contains natural phytoestrogens and progesterone which are identical to natural human hormones and do not have the side effects or cancer risks of synthetic hormones, like Premarin, etc.

And now, a little advice for both of you…

Share your toys, play for a while

You may have seen love stores popping up all over the place. Take your significant other and visit one! You’ll find “sex enhancement” products ranging from special lingerie for her (forget the flannel!), sexy underwear for him (ditch the boxers!), and a whole host of sex toys designed to stimulate your imagination as well as the rest of your life. you!

Sex Enhancement Toys: Proved to be a great help for older lovers, as the battery or power supply can achieve faster and stronger stimulation than by yourself. Vacuum pumps can help achieve satisfying erections safely, even with ED. Toys and enhancement devices can be a source of pleasure that is always a welcome aphrodisiac.

There are also increased stimulation lotions for men and women that are applied to the labial and penile skin during the first sexual games. Designed for those who find it difficult to “get there”, it contains a stimulant that can help you and your partner achieve a more intense orgasm.

Sex Enhancement Supplements: Available at health food stores is an herbal product that has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries called Horny Goat Weed (really, that’s the name!), it does exactly what the title says. It contains a substance called icariin which has a positive effect on genital blood flow. May take a little longer (sometimes a few days) to work than Rx-enhancing drugs like Viagra, but does not have the same side effects. However, they should not be taken if you are on heart rate or blood pressure type prescriptions. Others, ashwagandha and avena sativa, have long been used in Indian medicine for sexual dysfunction.

Well, here are some basic recommendations that I give to my patients over 50 who complain that their sex life isn’t what it used to be. Basically, healthy sex as you age comes down to being healthy in general. As you age, you need to pay more attention to nutrition, sleep, stress, and decreasing hormone levels. Your doctor can assess hormone levels and may consider a natural replacement if needed. Try some of the suggestions listed here and see if your love life picks up speed. Also, remember that physical sex is only part of a happy, romantic relationship with your partner. As Jack Nicholson’s character, Harry, discovers in the film, it’s not enough to be able to perform physically, you also have to let your heart feel the love!
