Insomnia Tip: Rolling Your Eyes Deepens Your Rest (Really!)

Eye rolling gets a bad rap – especially when a teenager reacts to a parent with Leave me alone the eyes. However, you can roll your eyes for the power of good: your relaxation!

When your eyes are closed, you can let your eyes soften and relax. Then your body slows down and your unconscious mind guides you into deeper renewal.

You probably know that while you sleep, your eyes move. In a later phase of sleep comes REM – Rapid Eye Movement. Then your eyes bounce under the lids, dreaming of monsters riding bikes or other weird fantasies.

Your eyes also move when you are about to sleep or have insomnia. Not the rapid movement of REM, but small movements under closed eyelids. They move when you remember things to do, imagine talking to your boss, or wondering if you should get up. When your eyes are closed, you are resting and helping your body pump out melatonin.

You can use your eyes to relax more deeply.

All you have to do is look up return— although you actually roll them up or down. This changes eye patterns from a direction of wakefulness (work/worry) to a pattern of sleep or deep rest. In fact, many meditators suggest rolling your eyes to deepen the inner experience.

When I want to change my mind with my eyes closed, I look down. It connects me to my unconscious and soothes my body. When you sleep, your eyes naturally roll up.

It is worth trying the descending and ascending rolls.

First just close your eyesand notice how your mind and body feel. So roll your eyes down. Notice your breathing and your feeling of relaxation. Then roll your eyes and notice your breathing and your body again.

When I roll my eyes, my breathing is a little slower and my arms are more relaxed. There is a subtle change in each state of eye rolling.

What’s weird is that when my eyes are rolled back, my mind always thinks I’m looking straight ahead. When I open my eyes, there is a distinct difference. If my eyes are straight ahead and eyes closed, I can focus quickly when I open my eyelids. If my eyes are rolling, there is a blur when I regain my vision.

Some of my clients notice a noticeable change throughout their entire body when they roll their eyes. Others play with it for a while before noticing how eye rolling can transform them. A few may not notice much difference.

What power do rolled eyes have over you? You will find yourself changing mind and body without doing much.
