I know the title of the article sounds a bit funny. I decided to write about it when I took a family beach vacation. During my travels, questions came to me that I had to answer.

  1. Why does my skin tend to clear up and look better at the beach?
  2. Why am I so super exhausted after a day sitting in a chair?
  3. Why do I always feel good during the day?

My curiosity always takes over and I started to do some research. I ended up finding a wealth of important information that I found very useful. I will break this research down into three parts:

  • Benefits of salt water
  • Benefits of Sunlight
  • Benefits of negative ions

Benefits of salt water:

When I started reading about salt water, I immediately realized why my skin always cleared up and looked healthier at the beach…it was mainly because of my time in the water. Natural salt (found in the ocean) contains microorganisms that increase the absorption of nutrients through the skin. This is especially important when talking about the ability of the sun to give the body vitamin D. which we will discuss later. The increased nutrient absorption also creates a natural detoxifying effect which allows your skin to “cleanse” impurities which in turn increases collagen production. The generation of collagen (new skin cells) creates new skin that looks healthy and above all “firmer”. It’s true…if you’re losing body fat, you’re probably struggling with loose skin as your makeup changes. Swimming in the ocean for thirty minutes or taking a 30-minute saltwater bath can really help your efforts. The increased collagen production can also help if you’re trying to heal scars or stretch marks.

Benefits of natural sunlight:

OK, the pros and cons of sun exposure have been debated for years. The following is a list of some interesting benefits of sun exposure. That said, too much sun exposure also carries a ton of risks…so it needs to be managed wisely.

Increase in testosterone. Sun Light has been shown to increase testosterone levels in both men and women. This happens because UV rays stimulate the leatherback ionizing hormone which in turn stimulates testosterone production. Testosterone production is very important for both men AND women because it promotes muscle growth, fat loss, and sexual function. Researchers have documented that the Greeks and Romans purposely trained outdoors because they believed it “enhanced performance”…maybe they were onto something.

Increase in melatonin. Here is the answer to my question about sleep. Obviously, sunlight has also shown an increase in melatonin levels. Melatonin is the sleep hormone that helps you get better, deeper sleep. Basically, the more time you spend in the sun… the better you’ll sleep.

Vitamin D. I obviously can’t talk about sunlight without the benefits of natural vitamin D. Sunlight improves the production of vitamin D in the skin. Vitamin D has been studied to help with healing, immunity, healthy insulin secretion, blood pressure regulation, among others.

Death to viruses. Natural sunlight has the ability to kill airborne viruses and bacteria. It can indirectly help you protect against disease and clean up damaged skin.

Increased metabolic rate. One of the ancillary benefits of sunlight is improved energy burning or metabolic rate. Increased production of all of the above means your body is doing more work. More work requires more energy.. therefore an increase in metabolic function. Obviously, a higher metabolism means better fat burning…which is what most of us are looking for.

Negative Ion Molecule – Benefits of Negative Ions

It’s obviously no secret that I’m a HUGE proponent of negative ion technology. However, the negative ion support I’m going to talk about today is natural…straight from mother nature. Mother nature provides ample amounts of negative ions when we are in the right areas. The beach is the right place. Researchers have estimated that crashing waves, cool ocean air, and waterfalls contain up to 100,000 negative ions per C/C of air. In comparison, the body only needs 1000 C/C to see great positive effects.

What are negative ions?

A negative ion is an oxygen molecule that has gained an electron.

Advantages?

  • Increase in circulation. Better circulation leads to better metabolic rate, better muscle recovery and pain relief.
  • Increased cognitive function: Better brain function which leads to clearer thinking.
  • Balanced Seretonin: Seretonin is a brain hormone that affects mood and sleep. By having balanced serotonin levels, your mood stays consistent, which affects daily activities and even sleep.

So! I think everyone now has a great excuse to get away to the beach on the weekend. Most of us spend time exercising and staying healthy FOR the beach, but maybe the beach can also help you during your efforts.
