The concept of meditation:
Meditation has become a common term in society at the moment. It has extended its roots deep from the corporate world to the common mass.
The number of yoga institutions has exploded recently and many terms for meditation practices are being coined to lure people into this path.
There are many categories of meditation. Some are listed below.
- Classic: It is the generic that does not follow any specific guidelines. It usually emerges from a belief and a personal tendency.

- Zen: This meditation is also known as zazen. This was done in a seated position (As the word Zazen indicates: Sitting meditation). It is widely practiced in Japan and China but its origins are linked to Buddhism in India.
- Vipassana: It is the word “Pali” which means clarity of insight. This method emphasizes the breathing pattern or conscious breathing. This is effective in calming the mind.
There are many other techniques like “Metta”, “Introspection”, “Kriya Yoga”, “Tao”, “Qigong” and so on.
Whatever the techniques; the goal is the most important of all. But, there are few misconceptions related to this wonderful faculty. I will try to eliminate five of them.
1) Mediation can be done!
The term meditation relates to the term “Dhyana” in Sanskrit. “Dhyana” is the seventh step of the “Patanjali Yoga Sutra”.
Patanjali Yoga Sutra is the oldest and most vivid documentation detailing the psycho-physiological connections and analyzing the minute strata of mind and intellect.
According to this eightfold system, meditation (Dhyana) is stillness of mind with active awareness. Thus, the consciousness of “I” slowly dissolves into consciousness and merges into one (The last stage: Samadhi). Meditation therefore could not be practiced. The brain becomes confused about physical and mental inactivity and treats this state as a pre-sleep stage. It secretes the hormone melatonin which naturally induces sleep just as it does when someone is getting ready for sleep.
This state is sometimes linked to the mediation itself, but it is far from it.
So to get into the basics of meditation; one should have a healthy body and a healthy sleep. Good nutritious food helps to enter into productive meditation.
A little freehand exercise, proper diet and sleep, and cultivate fairness; when maintained regularly can lead to lens.
3) Meditation is a religious practice
It is a practice to calm our mind. A calm and focused mind leads to broad awareness. This awareness ignites the consciousness (Viveka) which becomes a vehicle for the inner journey. This “Viveka” is also a tool to achieve interior unity.
This path is common to all, the path may vary. Thus, the practice of concentration to achieve the meditative state does not fall under any classification based on religion or belief.
You are completely free to choose your path if you want to walk independently. You will get there, regardless of religion.
4) The practice is extremely time consuming to provide benefits
This may vary with the effort provided but the benefits of the practice of concentration generate immediate effects on the psycho-physiological system. Within a week, a dedicated practitioner will experience the drop in blood pressure (if any), the release of stress, the decrease in anxiety, and an elevated experience of inner serenity. It also stimulates memory, the feeling of empathy. It regulates the sleep cycle for proper cleansing of body toxin. He eventually develops the character with a higher sense of humanity.
5) It’s difficult!
This point should have come first but I mentioned it as the last point because it is the ultimate hurdle to overcome. Things get progressively more complicated so this is the last to overcome. I’m sure you can!
