Antioxidants Role In Neutralizing Free Radicals
When discussing antioxidants and free radicals, it is important to start with little knowledge of chemical bonds. When we talk about antioxidants and radical agents, we can’t help but touch biochemistry a little. You may remember from your old school days that the body is made up of many different types of cells and each cell is made up of many different molecules. Molecules are made up of atoms of one or more elements that are joined together by chemical bonds.
A normal atom consists of a nucleus – neutrons, protons and electrons. Electrons are those negatively charged particles that orbit around the cluster of protons in an atom.
When there are eight electrons in an orbit, it suggests that this real orbit (or shell as it is called) is full, which further means that the atom is stable. Stable atoms tend not to enter into chemical reactions. This is because the atoms try to reach a condition of maximum stability. If the atom is not stable, it will try to fill its shell with electrons by:
- Gain or lose electrons to fill or empty its outer shell
- Sharing its electrons by bonding with other atoms to complete its outer shell
Free Radicals – How Are They Formed
They are created when weak bonds between atoms are split. Free radical compounds contain an unusual, unpaired electron which makes them particularly unstable and they will react quickly with other compounds. Because it is the nature of oxidizing agents, which are basically an atom with an unpaired electron, to achieve stability, they will try to do this by capturing the required electron from other molecules. When the free radical composes the electrons of a stable molecule, this molecule itself transforms into a free radical, starting a chain process. Once the free radical compound formation method is initiated, it can cascade, eventually leading to the disruption of a living cell.
Antioxidants: natural enemies of free radicals
It is believed that antioxidant agents like vitamins C and E protect the body against the harmful effects of oxidative compounds. Antioxidant compounds neutralize oxidant compounds. Antioxidants do this by donating one of their own electrons, thus ending the electron “stealing” reaction.
