Learn to Play Guitar Twice as Fast While Practicing Half as Much

If you really want to learn how to play the guitar well, you need to do one simple thing before anything else. You have to learn how learning takes place between your muscles and your brain. If you understand the process your brain has to go through to train your muscles, your workouts will produce effective and predictable results.

You’ve probably heard the term muscle memory before. It’s the process by which your brain learns and stores a set of precise instructions for each group of muscles needed for each little task you want your fingers to perform on the guitar. When muscle memory is firmly established, it becomes a naturally effortless and almost unconscious act of playing the guitar well.

These tasks should be practiced at slow enough speeds that you can still perform them perfectly. If you practice the guitar at a pace that produces a lot of errors, you end up teaching your muscles how to play the exercise with the errors included. Unfortunately, muscles cannot distinguish between playing with errors and playing without them.

Here are 12 tips for having workouts that will promote the development of good muscle memory:

1. Prepare your whole body for the workout.

Train while being relaxed. Just as an airplane pilot checks the plane before takeoff, you should check your body for any tightness, stiffness, tightness, pain, or discomfort. Tight muscles can get tighter during practice, which can seriously limit the full range of motion needed to master the guitar. Even the tension in the shoulders can spread to the arms, and then eventually to the fingers. Stretch and warm up your entire body before playing to stay loose. Start practicing with slow, easy exercises to prepare your hands for new, more demanding materials.

2. Train in a quiet, comfortable place where you are unlikely to be disturbed.

This is useful whether you plan to play just for friends at a party or in a stadium full of cheering fans.

For each part of a scale, exercise, or song, find the fastest metronome speed you can play without making mistakes. Practice it for a day at 25% to 30% of this maximum tempo. Continue with a day at 50% of the maximum then another day at 75%. On day four, train at your old top speed. You might be pleasantly surprised to find that you have a new, faster top speed. Be warned, however, that this routine may seem ridiculously slow, but hang in there because it will really pay off.

8. Don’t try to learn too many different things each practice session.

Practice only small sections of an exercise or song at a time. Working on a brand new song, all in one frame, makes it harder for your brain to cement strong muscle memories. Just as a newborn cannot endure a full meal of solid food, we only need to practice a few small musical spoonfuls at a time.

9. Work on the problematic parts and not just on what you already know.

It may seem extremely obvious, but new guitarists tend to play the easy parts over and over while continuing to stumble over the trouble spots.

10. Spend the first ten minutes warming up, then split the remaining time equally between new exercises and new songs.

11. Set aside time to have fun with the guitar.

Be sure to inject a healthy dose of fun into every workout. If you’ve been working on blues scales, why not put on some jam tracks or even your favorite blues CD and try improvising a solo. Select a favorite song to work on at the end of each workout.

12. If you plan to perform in front of people

perfect your songs privately, then practice playing in front of friendly friends and family. Create a practice environment as close as possible to the conditions of your next performance. If you’re going to play standing up, practice that way. Tell your friendly practice audiences to feel free to talk and laugh during your practice. This will help you learn to feel comfortable in a distracting concert environment. Consider recording your workouts with a simple home video camera on a tripod.

Opening night jitters can throw off your game, no matter how familiar you are with the hardware. If you’ve practiced repeatedly playing in simulated concert environments, the real deal may be a breeze.
