The Pros And Cons Of Mice As Pets
There are distinct advantages, but also definite disadvantages to keeping mice as pets. They are easy to care for, do not live long and store easily in a small space. However, they are also skittish, short-lived, and not very interactive in many cases.
Mice can live quite well in a 10 gallon aquarium with a mesh top or a similar sized cage. They need a food dish, a water bottle, a place to hide, and maybe a wheel to run on and/or a chew block. Some sort of bedding should be placed at the bottom of the cage to absorb urine and usually only needs to be changed about once a week.
Mouse urine is quite pungent, especially that of mature males. This can be tempered a bit by keeping only females or by cleaning the cage daily or every other day. But mice usually smell something, so if you hate the smell, maybe another pet or no pet would be better for you.
The lifespan of a mouse is not very long, usually about a year to a year and a half. It can be difficult if they become beloved pets, but it also means they are less engaged. This makes them good pets for children who are old enough to be responsible but might lose interest in about a year.
Food and bedding for a mouse or two are not very expensive. They are tiny and don’t eat much, nor do they need a lot of bedding for their cages. However, veterinary care for your mouse won’t be much cheaper than for a cat or small dog, especially since you would need to call in an exotics specialist.
A solitary mouse is unlikely to be happy, as they are deeply social creatures. However, they are shy enough that it is difficult to get a mouse with a companion to bond with you. Two babies or already friendly adults are usually best, as they will bond with you while enjoying each other’s company. Always choose two people of the same gender.
Interaction with a mouse is limited. People can hold them and sometimes let them run around office computers or other secure areas, but care must be taken that they do not escape. And older mice that aren’t tamed yet can be tricky to handle. However, people who mostly enjoy watching their pets run and play will really appreciate having a mouse or two.
