Fun and Easy Early Spring Activities for Kids
Like all moms, I try to find cool and clever ways to make my kids feel special. With so many fun holidays around the corner (Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter) and the winter doldrums setting in, I thought it would be fun to share with you three of my top tips for your child feels like a shining star in early spring!
Drum roll!…
1. Love notes. What better time of year than now to put little love notes in your kids’ lunches? Use the little Valentine’s Day cards from the drugstore and just say something short and sweet like, “I’m thinking of you today and don’t forget to eat your carrots! Love, Mom xx
To moms of sons – my son (now 15) absolutely loved these little notes. And I wrote them all year round, not just around Valentine’s Day. So don’t think you can’t get mushy with your tough little man, trust me they melt for mommy!
2. Green food coloring. These three magic words. Whether you’re pure-blood Irish-American or just Irish-minded, once St. Patrick’s Day rolls around, it’s time to color your world green. You know your kids will love seeing (and hopefully eating) green mashed potatoes, green milk, green pancakes, and of course green eggs (optional ham a la Dr. Seuss). So put on your green and help usher in the winds of March.
And if a severe snowstorm comes your way, please add a few drops of green food coloring to the snow. It will be perfect for a dapper Irish snowman, or a St. Patrick’s Day snowball fight!
3. Hunt for fun. I’ve always loved using the Easter Egg Hunt tradition, but extending it into the weeks leading up to Easter. Every day when my kids came home from school, I sent them on a little mini egg hunt with a handwritten surprise inside. You know we need to do everything in our power NOT to make Easter all about candy. (Cavities, dental bills, sugar-fueled tantrums…)
Surprises would be things like, “We’re going out to dinner tonight, your choice – dinner or pizza?” or “You can invite a friend over this Saturday” or “You can choose a movie for family movie night tonight”. Things like that. These little egg hunts have created some real special memories.
4. Make them feel super special all year round. Once my kids were old enough, I let them each choose a favorite photo, and we turned them into peel and stick murals for their rooms. My son chose a photo of him playing roller hockey in his full goalie uniform and my daughter chose a photo of a beautiful horse for her horse themed room. Let me tell you, they loved showing off their own wall art to family and friends.
Moms, these are the best years of your life. Use a little imagination and creativity to help your kids feel special every day!
