The Secret Herbal Colic Home Remedy
Is it true? Can there really be a home remedy for colic?
Having heard stories from my friends whose new babies have struggled with colic, the thought of a cure must be welcome relief, a breath of fresh air, and a glimpse of possible rest for your family.
Colic occurs at different levels of severity and is caused by spasms of the new intestines or gas trapped in the intestines. My babies never had what I would consider a severe case of colic, yet we encountered early digestive issues that caused them discomfort and found herbal remedies that worked for us.
My favorite home remedy for colic is catnip, fennel tea.
Prepare this infusion by pouring a cup of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of dried catnip leaves and 1 teaspoon of fennel.

Two other colic remedies are recommended in Susun Weed’s Healing Wise and seem worth trying. The first is to put cold, damp woolen socks on your baby’s feet, then dry cotton socks on top of the woolen ones. She writes that mothers report that their babies relax and fall asleep soon after the socks are put on their feet.
Another option for a home remedy for colic is to make slippery elm oatmeal.
To do this, mix a liquid sweetener (like maple syrup – definitely NOT HONEY since honey should never be given to a baby under one year old as botulism could result) with powdered slippery elm until it’s all wet. Add hot milk or water until you get a porridge. Give one or more servings to calm the intestines.
All of these colic home remedies help with digestion to relieve colic discomfort, and there are also many things you can do to help prevent colic.
Some of these things include giving small, frequent feedings and soothing your baby with skin-to-skin contact during feedings. Also, feeding your baby in a quiet, safe place can aid digestion.
If you’re breastfeeding, you can also avoid gas-producing foods like cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, kale, and cabbage, as well as onions and garlic.
I generally recommend that moms take it easy on beans and spicy foods for the first few days of breastfeeding. Other foods like chocolate, peanuts, sugar, and white flour can slow bowel activity and cause colic. So you can try to eliminate them. Also limit your intake of food laxatives (like prune juice) as they can upset the baby’s bowels.
