5 Simple Strategies for Raising Awesome Kids

Do you remember the friends you had in high school who were given a car with no expectation of accountability versus those friends who had to work for their car?

I’m sure you noticed the same difference I did, in terms of the level of care and appreciation they had for their vehicles.

When my kids were that age and a classmate got a car, they got in trouble. The kids who had to work for the car enjoyed it!

When you don’t earn the things you want, you don’t enjoy them.

Doing chores as a child teaches children to be responsible, responsible and disciplined. Does it also build a “good work ethic” for their future?

Zig Ziglar, motivational speaker and author, was the tenth of twelve children. He was born in “LA” (that’s lower Alabama) and grew up in Yazoo City, Mississippi. His mother had a fifth grade education and his father died when he was 5 during the Depression.

Zig said, “Mom was a wise woman. We were all hard workers, as we had three dairy cows and a big garden, and we survived despite all the hardships.” As a child, Zig Ziglar’s chore was to weed their large garden. When he told his mother he had finished weeding the garden which she would check to see how it was done. His mother said, “For someone else’s boy, the job was well done, but for my boy, you can do a better job!” He went to weed that garden again and she checked it again!

Ziglar said, “We all had wonderful childhoods.”

Ziglar said, “Well, first of all, my mother a very wise woman, despite her limited education. She taught us with (one) sentence from the sermonettes. She taught us, ‘Tell the truth/Tell it always / Cost us what it / For he who hides the evil he has done / Still does evil” and “When a task is once begun / You do not leave it until it is done/And either big or small business/You do it well or not at all.’ “Ziglar agreed it was poetry. ‘She was a very wise, very disciplined, very loving woman, and those biblical principles, that’s what they are, that’s what we were brought up on. .”

Dr. John Maxwell, #1 leadership guru, coach and one of my mentors, says that as a kid, he was given a to-do list at the start of the week.

If he hadn’t finished his chores, he wouldn’t be allowed to go to the restaurant or the movies with his family on the weekends. Instead, he stayed home and finished his chores. He learned after that to do his chores on time.

What is the best gift you can give your children?

The greatest gift you can give your children is to teach them a good work ethic by giving them tasks to complete to earn what they want and need.

Chores have taught us to work hard, be responsible, responsible and respectful, which gives us a good foundation for our future.

So what are 5 simple strategies for raising awesome kids?

1) Give them age-appropriate chores. Start helping them learn a good work ethic at a young age so they grow into responsible, responsible, and caring adults.

2) Every morning and night when your child wakes up and falls asleep, tell him with a smile how much you love and care for him, say something loving to him and kiss him on the cheek. Ask them during their day’s dinner. Remember that you are there to help your children solve their problems and make good choices in a caring atmosphere.

If your child has a learning disability, find the best teaching method to help him learn and grow. Don’t put them down or belittle them. Help your child find a place to learn with patience and encouragement.

Remember what Benjamin Franklin asked himself every morning, “what good am I doing today?” And every night Franklin would ask himself, “What did I do well today?”

3) Take time out of your busy schedule to attend your child’s sports games, dance recitals, orchestral or band concerts. Attend with a smile and be proud of these little moments for them. Show that you care and love them. Give them your TIME, your patience, your kindness and your encouragement!

Turn off your cell phone and leave it in the car!

4) Praise all the good things they do to keep them doing it. Correct the wrong, but don’t be afraid to let your children fail! If they do something wrong, tell them in private, not in front of their friends or other family members

5) Show your children daily that their parents love and respect each other. Never disparage a spouse in front of your children. Say only words of love, hugs, kisses and friendship. If there is a problem, meet privately to discuss the issue or question!
