Disciplines of Discipleship: What Should They Be Taught
Paul spoke of those who should be teachers but who instead end up as those who need to be taught. Unable to consume and understand the solid food of the Word of God, but only milk because they had no listening ears. As a child’s diet begins with milk and must evolve into solid foods, we must seek him out for solid foods so that we can grow in his grace and knowledge of him. Without it and by practicing it, we will not have our senses trained (discipline) resulting in our inability to discern even between good and evil.
There are many examples of the myriad efforts of people who display the disciplines necessary to achieve a desired result. A long-distance runner must first learn the required disciplines and then practice them diligently. Our continued practice of these disciplines is evidence of the sincerity of confession and commitment. A new recruit follows a proven method of basic training in an effort to give him the best chance of survival and victory. We have received extremely great and precious promises that guarantee our survival and our victory. And if we practice them and they increase, we will not fail, but abundant input will be provided.
The disciplines of discipleship are like a triple cord that cannot be broken when properly woven together. Each is vitally important. None can be overlooked or the cord will become weak and fail.
One of the first instincts of a newborn child of God is to desire the sincere milk of the Word of God. We must be fed on His Word and trained to then feed ourselves. For about two years Paul continued to train the believers in Ephesus, going from house to house. He taught them all the counsel of God. Although he was called to be an apostle to evangelize (go into the whole world), make disciples, baptize them in his name and teach them to obey all that he commands us, he knew he would go soon and would never see them here again. Their dependence on him must decrease and he must increase in them. For He is the Apostle and High Priest of our confession. Unlike this world where we are taught to mature and become independent, in His Kingdom we are rescued from our arrogant independence and mature into absolute dependence on Him. We must learn that we can do nothing, nothing without Him. Search him in the scriptures, for he testifies to us of himself through them. The Word of God, one of the disciplines of discipleship.
I believe the Gospels record only one specific request of the Lord from the disciples, “teach us to pray”. He taught a parable to teach us that we should always pray and not faint. Pray not to fall into temptation. Again, we are told to dedicate ourselves to prayer, to pray without ceasing. The end of the list of weapons of our warfare in Ephesians seems to be prayer-related, at all times. He alone can truly teach us prayer. Prayer is a command. Prayer is one of the disciplines of discipleship.
His city where he lives is with his people. We are told that His City is compacted. His children were brought to a living stone so that we might become living stones built up for him. His body is one, but composed of many members. His Temple, made without hands, is made of many stones. We cannot grow to Him alone. We must have the fellowship of those who have such precious faith, and our fellowship is with the Father. His purpose is that every joint and every tendon be compacted together to supply each other with His strength. This fellowship, His fellowship is one of the disciplines of discipleship.
Ultimately, only He can teach and instill in us these disciplines of discipleship. When we do this by his grace in the obedience of faith continually presenting ourselves as living offerings, he will produce the fruit of himself and will remain forever. No one drifts towards God, we drift away from Him. Unless we actively exercise the disciplines of discipleship, we will begin to drift.
