How to Care For Orphaned Guinea Pigs in Five Easy Steps
There’s nothing more stressful than finding yourself responsible for caring for a litter of orphaned puppies in case the mother dies or refuses to nurse for any reason. Although it takes time and commitment, don’t worry, it’s something you CAN do.
Supplies you will need:
- Shoe box
- Bottle of water
- Insulating materials like towels, old socks, etc.
- Extra cloths to wrap babies when handling
- Washcloths
- A scale – postal or kitchen to weigh babies
- A chart to track your weight
- Special food like Oxbow Critical Care (can be obtained from a vet)
- A useless syringe
- A selection of real foods like hay, grass, vegetables, greens, etc.
Supplies you won’t need
A number of resources recommend using milk, milk mixes, or diluted evaporated milk as a replacement for breast milk. This is not necessary as babies can eat real food with help. Animal products are, as always, harmful to guinea pigs.
Step 1 – Configure the Living Zone
Take the hot water bottle and fill it with warm, but not HOT, water. Place it along the side wall of the shoebox. Fill the remaining areas with insulating materials. Don’t overtighten as you want babies to dig in. Be sure to check the water bottle regularly to make sure it’s still hot. Fill if necessary.
Step 2 – Weigh each of the babies
Immediately after birth, weigh each baby. This is going to be a task that you do every day, so making a chart is going to be helpful. The weight of a baby is going to be an indication of its development. Don’t worry if you see small drops in weight over a few days, this may be normal. Just take the time to provide some extra food and see if that helps. Otherwise, please make an appointment with your veterinarian.
Stage 3 – Feed every two hours during the day for the first two days
Prepare the food solution in advance. To prepare the food, take the Critical Care and soak it in water to soften it. Then crush in a liquid. Place in an unnecessary syringe. Try giving about one to two ccs of solution per baby. Lift the baby you plan to feed and wrap him in a cloth to keep him warm during the feed. Feed them gently using the syringe (or if desired, a spoon is fine too if that works.) It is important to be slow and gentle, not forceful as it is easy for babies to choke or inhale the food.
Step 4 – Encourage Elimination
Young baby guinea pigs will not eliminate waste without help. All you have to do is wipe each baby’s genitals with a warm washcloth after each feeding. Then watch to make sure the normal kills are happening. If elimination does not occur for an extended period of time, it can be life threatening, so you may need veterinary help.
Step 5 – Introduce solid foods
In addition to keeping an assortment of adult guinea pig food available in the baby cage, young guinea pigs also learn by modeling. If you have another guinea pig in your home, this can serve as a model for the puppies. Let the puppies observe the adult guinea pig eating.
