Weaning From Breastfeeding – 3 Food Substances to Avoid, For Now (Part 1)

I have heard countless “horror” stories about weaning/breastfeeding from some mothers. They say that while they were weaning from breastfeeding, they made a mistake at one time or another. But one mom in particular stands out. She said she was so happy her 6-month-old daughter responded to baby cereal and was weaned to formula almost immediately that a few days later she included cow’s milk as a thickener for the cereal.

The result? Her baby had a rare allergic reaction to milk and made her lactose intolerant. Unfortunately, the intolerance included her mother’s breast milk. So they had to spend tons of money on lactose intolerant milk supplements.

The story above reminds mothers that before babies reach 12 months, they need to choose their baby’s meals carefully. If there is a family history of allergies, it is best to consult a pediatrician to recommend alternatives to baby food. If you don’t have a history, you can also be cautious. The list below lists the types of foods that SHOULD NOT be included in a baby’s diet, especially if they are under 12 months old:

– Salt. Breast milk and infant formula already contain salt built into their substances. A baby does not need extra salt because of this fact. Most importantly, never put salt in baby’s food because their kidneys are not yet fully developed at this age. The salt content of food can actually damage their kidneys and is also a major factor in getting diabetes later in life.

– Cow’s milk. As mentioned above, this can make your baby lactose intolerant. Indeed, it contains milk proteins that your baby may not have consumed yet. It can be difficult for your baby to digest and absorb and can cause nausea or stomach pain – and it’s no big stressor for a mother to see her child suffer. Also, completely avoid skimmed milk and low-fat dairy products because they provide an insufficient amount of iron, vitamin E and essential fatty acids. It also gives too much protein, sodium and potassium. And studies have shown that infants who received cow’s milk suffer from iron deficiency.

– Unpasteurized milk. A baby (or even a toddler) should ALWAYS be given pasteurized milk. In pasteurization, the milk is heated (but not boiled, to prevent curdling), killing bacteria and some of the antibodies the body doesn’t really need. If the milk is not pasteurized, certain bacteria like E.Coli would grow. If given to babies and toddlers, they can have severe diarrhea which can eventually lead to dehydration and loss of electrolytes in the body, sometimes (but rarely) leading to death.

When it comes to babies, a mother should always be protective. His diet is no exception. There are other foods that can affect or be harmful to a child (there is a part 2 and a part 3 for this article because this information is very important, especially for new mothers). Even if your family doesn’t have a history of allergies (and by allergies, asthma is included, not just food-related), it’s still best to see your doctor.
