6 Auditory Processing Activities Improve Reading Skills Without Spending a Dime

Auditory processing skills come into play in becoming a competent reader. Think about it for a minute. Reading requires decoding words (the ability to pronounce printed words) as well as encoding words (the ability to put letters to the sounds that make up a word).

Many students who struggle with reading struggle to read because they have auditory processing difficulties. There are actually nine areas of auditory processing that affect learning. Problems with one or more of these areas can make learning difficult. The cause of auditory processing difficulties may be due to CAPD, ADD, dyslexia, learning disability, learning disability, or autism.

If you’re a parent working with your own child, or you’re tutoring a student, or you’re homeschooling, or you’re a teacher, there are specific things you can do to make a difference in your child’s learning life.

Here are 6 activities you can use to strengthen auditory processing. These auditory processing activities use objects that you usually have at home or in the classroom.

These activities are designed so you can do them at home after school or during the day if you are homeschooling. These activities will help children with dyslexia, learning disabilities, ADHD, auditory processing issues such as auditory memory, auditory discrimination and auditory closure.

Awareness of phonemes or letter sounds

To be successful in reading and spelling, your child must perceive the individual phonemes of the language. He must learn to differentiate each sound of the language representing a form of letter from the other sounds. These abilities are essential for decoding written language.

  1. Initial consonants. Learning the first sounds of words is important. To prepare for this activity, make a list of 40 words (1 keyword and 3 words per beat – eg popcorn: plate, handle, lamp; banana: car, bus, carpet; milk: astronaut, mountain, bicycle). Then say, “Tell me the word that starts like Pop corn: plate, handle, lamp.” Continue your list of keywords and words.
  2. Ask your child to think of words that begin as a specific word: eg Tom, Candy, Dog, Fan, etc.
  3. Ask your child to find pictures of words beginning with To Mor find pictures of words in magazines that start with the letter J. Find the word that is different at the beginning of the rest: “paper, pear, table, past.”
  4. Mixtures of consonants, digraphs, endings, vowels. Similar activities can be designed to help your child learn to hear and discriminate between other phonic elements.
  5. Words that rhyme. Learning to hear rhyming words helps your child recognize phonograms. Games similar to initial consonants can be used with rhyming words. Experience with nursery rhymes and rhyming poems is also helpful.
  6. Rhymes of puzzles. Make up rhyming puzzles. Ask your child to guess the last rhyming word. For example: “It rhymes with book. You hang your clothes on a _________.”

Remember that good auditory processing skills are an essential part of reading success. Fortunately, there are a variety of books, games, and guides specifically designed to work on auditory processing alongside specific skills such as reading, spelling, note taking, and comprehension. When choosing materials, you want to be sure they will do two things. You want to make sure they address auditory processing skills such as auditory memory, auditory comprehension, auditory discrimination, auditory closure, and reading comprehension. You also want to make sure they teach specific learning skills like reading, writing, and spelling.
