How to Start a Diet For ADHD Children

Many parents think that changing their child’s diet will be expensive and the child will constantly fight to get their old food back! But it’s not as difficult as you might think. Of course, it’s best to start a healthy diet as soon as bites are introduced and not give them sweets from an early age. But, it is not impossible to change even for a child of eight or ten years old. You’d be surprised how many children will adapt to a new diet. Especially if everyone in the family eats it. And, the food that’s best for ADHD kids is healthy food that’s also good for the whole family.

My son is now seven years old and even though I introduced foods like salmon and broccoli at a fairly young age, which he still eats, I can keep him on the foods that are best for his ADHD even though there are many temptations. He doesn’t feel deprived and even tells me sometimes when it happens that he eats something he probably shouldn’t have eaten and he doesn’t like how he feels.

Here are some simple tips that will get you started as I found the best job for our family.

1. Don’t go shopping with the kids!

2. Make your list so you know exactly what you’re buying. Impulse buying usually involves buying foods that you are trying to avoid.

3. Don’t buy processed foods, refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, chemical additives such as artificial flavors and colors.

4. Do not buy foods containing hydrogenated oils, trans fats and saturated fats.

5. If possible, eliminate dairy products and see if that helps, as dairy products in the diet of children with ADHD are generally not well tolerated.

6. Try to have protein with every meal to control blood sugar.

7. Children with ADHD have many nutrient deficiencies, so giving ADHD children extra vitamins is something you should add to your list.

Try to buy pesticide and hormone free if possible, most grocery stores sell organic produce now, or try local farmers markets. These days you can even find bacon that is not treated with nitrates; there are even great tasting natural corn dogs which my son loves and it can tell the difference even when I switch brands of milk.

Numerous studies confirm that ADHD children’s diets lack essential fatty acids that help with learning, behavior, sleep and immunity. Omega 3 essential fatty acids are abundant in brain cells and the only way to get these fabulous fats is to eat them. There are also homeopathic remedies on the market which, in addition to vitamins for children with ADHD, also aid in their recovery.

Changing the ADHD children’s diet and supplementing that diet with vitamins for ADHD children is the best way to help your child now and in the future with a healthy lifestyle.
