I just look in the mirror and the truth hits me between the eyes.
I recently listened to a woman talk about obesity in our children. She made me think back to my childhood and how I raised my two children.
Today, the food choices and nutritional value are very different from when I was in charge of my children’s food consumption.
Food today is loaded with chemicals and when we eat that food, where is the nutritional value?
Vitamin supplements come out of the doors of stores that sell them. It is now a multi-billion dollar business. I know for myself that I would try to cure myself of any disease I have naturally rather than taking a prescription or over the counter medication.
What does this have to do with our children and their food choices?
A lot if you’ve ever watched your kids eat and seen what they choose to put in their mouths, which travels down their throats and then settles in their stomachs, you’d want to vomit.
The soda the best friend of our children, it tastes good, and it comes in so many flavors:
How do you stop this avalanche of soda drinkers that begins in childhood and continues into adulthood? We can start buying it out of our homes. That would be one less place for the child to get that dose of sugar and caffeine. We can’t control what they spend when they’re with their friends, but we have to start somewhere.
In recent years, I have stopped drinking sodas and caffeinated coffee. I now drink bottled water. I don’t miss sugar or caffeine and I feel so much better. But I am an adult; children need to be helped to make the right decisions.
What’s wrong with drinking milk? It is food for our bones and teeth. It’s just a thought.
FRIES, CHEESE AND FRIES:
Who doesn’t want to eat chips and fries instead of vegetables and salad. We need fat, salt and cheese after all, it just clogs our arteries.
This is another huge problem facing parents today. French fries, cheese and french fries are not going to disappear as long as the income from these products is astronomical.
How can we change this or at least balance it between fruits and vegetables? Everyone has an opinion and the only person who can implement this change is you.
As an adult, I find it difficult to control what I eat. I recently attended a wonderful dinner at a friend’s house. The menu was not what I usually eat due to the content of the ingredients.
But I was with friends, we were all sitting around the table laughing, talking and enjoying each other’s company; therefore, I ate too much bad food.
Our children are put in this situation every day and they have less control over what they eat and I am the mature adult.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
If there was an easy answer to this question, I would be a millionaire. We need to step back and look at this issue from a child’s perspective and then make changes.
Schools are where children eat their daily meals. Sometimes breakfast and definitely lunch every day. The food choices available are all the child can choose from unless they bring packed lunches.
Maybe that’s what it takes. Maybe all kids should start bringing their own lunches to school and parents can send a message to the school cafeteria STOP POISONING OUR CHILDREN.
(1) These are our children. Our own flesh and blood. They are precious to us and we could not live without them.
(2) Why is it so difficult for you to understand that good nutrition improves the health of mind and body.
(3) We take valuable time out of our jobs for their medical care.
(4) We take care of them when they are sick.
(5) You are creating a huge medical and dental problem that is now snowballing.
Believe it or not, children’s health problems are now climbing the stairs to the top floor faster than this problem can be solved.
(1) Heart problems
(2) Diabetes problems
(3) high cholesterol
These are just a few steps that lead to an uncontrollable spiral. Let’s find a solution to this huge problem and quit.
Fast food is wonderful for busy families and as an occasional treat. Fast food restaurants have taken a big leap forward in catering to kids and adults who don’t want to eat sandwiches and fries with every meal. Now you can substitute a salad.
Well done fast food!
Now that you’ve taken the first step, maybe you can take another small step. Have fresh fruit to purchase, if desired. You might be surprised your customers actually eat it.
Perhaps you could take a look at your menu with a parent’s eye. What nutritional value would I like my child to eat? Maybe you could get creative and develop a tasty and appealing dish that the kids will love.
There are many positive activities your children can participate in. Here are a few :
ACTIVITIES FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN TOGETHER:
(1) Walk around
(2) Fly a kite
(3) Play ball
(6) Swimming – A day at the pool or beach.
(7) Reading of a book followed by a discussion.
(8) Try writing a short story or a poem together.
(9) Write a cookbook together.
(11) Try cutting out food groups from magazines and creating a colorful picture that you can display on your refrigerator or other places in your home.
The ideas are endless since every child and parent has their own special interests and they don’t need to cost a fortune. In the long run, your children want to spend time with you.
When your kids are healthy and busy, they’re less likely to get into trouble. For children and teenagers, problems lurk everywhere if they choose to look for them.
LABELS ON CANS AND BOTTLES:
Reading the labels on cans and bottles in grocery stores is confusing. I read, read and read and in the end I don’t know which article to buy? Do you also feel like this?
Maybe the food industry should try to use plain English to label their foods. What’s really in it? Don’t you want us, the consumers, who buy and eat your food, to know the truth about the ingredients in your products?
In a restaurant, it seems that every tempting dish contains too much fat, cheese and salt. All the ingredients that make your palate dance with pleasure but oh what it does for your internal and external body.
As a parent, you should lead by example in your daily diet and exercise. You might not think your kids notice it, but they do.
GET THE KIDS COOKING:
Let your children, depending on their age, help you in the kitchen. Let them choose the menu and let them prepare it. Most children who help prepare food will eat it.
IN CONCLUSION :
This topic is so vast and expansive that it makes me dizzy just thinking about it.
As a mother and grandmother, I am by no means a professional, but these are my thoughts. If your child is not getting a well-balanced diet daily, make sure they get a good vitamin/mineral supplement.
I think many of the issues kids face today with attention deficit issues, behavioral issues, and medical issues stem from eating a balanced diet.
