Water Is Life
Scientists have taught us that the total mass of the earth is made up of about two-thirds water. Most other things in life also contain water in very significant amounts. Talk about the food we eat and the fruits too. It couldn’t be strange to discover that these hard materials that you see daily and everywhere have their respective significant amounts of water. It is noted that the human body is composed of approximately 60% water.
Take a glass of water, even when you’re not thirsty, and you’ll feel some kind of satisfaction. Whenever thirst sets in, drinking water creates a special mode of relief that can only be overcome by catching one’s breath during resuscitation. Water is life; it is the second most important substance after the air we breathe. Its essence is hard to quantify in words and numbers, because it does so much more than we can already imagine.
In the fruits we eat, despite their variable contents, water always constitutes their greatest proportion by mass. Take the following list as an example:
Food / Percentage / Water
Lettuce / (1½ cup) / 95%
Watermelon / (1½ cup) / 92%
Grapefruit / (1½ cup) / 91%
Milk / (1 cup) / 89%
Orange juice / (3/4 cup) / 88%
Carrot / (1½ cup) / 87%
Yogurt / (1 cup) / 85%
Apple / (one support) / 84%
HOW MUCH WATER DO YOU NEED DAILY?
The amount of water an individual needs daily depends on several factors. Although in the past we were made to accept the idea that we should drink at least eight glasses of water a day; recent research findings have overturned this misconception. There is no doubt that water is good and very important; however, its intake should be governed by size, activity level, weather, and your overall health.
Following the results of research conducted by Heinz Valtin, published in the American Journal of Physiology in 2002, which challenged the old belief of 8 glasses of water a day, he concluded that the major determinant of the amount of water consumed should be thirsty. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) in America also endorsed his findings. They released new guidelines in 2004 that removed the eight-glass-per-day recommendation and stated that healthy adults can use thirst to determine their fluid needs. Despite little controversy, the importance of water has never been seriously doubted.
The IOM report was based on surveys and recommended more than 11 cups a day for women and more than 15 cups a day for men. This is total fluid intake, including fluids from all foods and drinks.
About 80% of our water consumption comes from drinking water and other beverages, while the remaining 20% comes from food. Assuming these percentages are correct for most of us, the recommended amount of drinks, including water, would be around 9 cups for women and 12.5 cups for men. Many of our foods are mostly water, especially fruits.
WHAT WILL DRINKING WATER DO FOR YOU?
Honestly, drinking water will do more than you can imagine. Water is life; it brings satisfaction every time you use it. Eating without drinking water can be suffocating, especially if starchy foods like eba (cassava extract) are involved. To say that water is an essential part of a balanced diet is to say the least. We can consider the following as other benefits of water.
IT INCREASES YOUR ENERGY LEVEL
Drinking water does a lot to help you gain energy, when consumed in moderate amounts relative to need. Thirst is due to dehydration and the only cure is hydration: drink water. There is a feeling of fatigue when one is thirsty due to dehydration. The energy level increases once the water is consumed. But when you take too much, weakness sets in.
IT REDUCES YOUR STRESS
About four out of five brain tissues are made up of water. When there is dehydration, there is water shortage. This condition leads to stress. However, when water is consumed, the tissues become hydrated. Therefore, stress is reduced or eliminated. Drink water regularly and momentarily.
IT BUILD YOUR MUSCLE
You must know the meaning of turgidity. It’s strength in a way. Water fills the muscles and makes them strong by being enlarged. It’s never a serious way to build big muscles, like the bodybuilders we see in magazines, online, and on TV as models. It also helps muscles prevent cramps and lubricates joints. Plus, when you drink enough water, you’ll last longer in your exercise sessions.
IT NOURISHES YOUR SKIN
Dehydration causes wrinkles and lines on your skin. It makes the skin aged and ugly. Nature, however, provides beauty cream in the form of water. Skin cells are hydrated and plumped up to give skin a youthful and beautiful appearance. It shines because the water removes impurities in the blood, improving circulation and blood flow.
IT REDUCES KIDNEY STONES
Kidney stones are crystals formed by excess salts and minerals in the urine as it passes through the kidneys. Drinking enough water regularly dilutes urine by inhibiting the formation of kidney stones. Diluted urine does not allow the formation of kidney stones. To drink a lot of water.
IT HELPS DIGESTION
This is perhaps the most important advantage. Water facilitates the digestion of food. Waste particles are also easily dissolved and pass smoothly through the digestive tract. In a case where there is dehydration, the body absorbs all the water; makes it difficult to digest and pass waste.
IT HELPS WEIGHT LOSS
It can never be stranger than it is; yet, it can never be truer. You should replace high-calorie mineral (non-alcoholic) drinks with more water. Metabolic reactions are increased to enhance the burning of more calories. When you drink water, especially cold water, the body generates heat to warm the water, thereby burning some calories.
Water is life and its universal meaning can in no way substitute for any other substance. It’s fulfilling and fulfilling. It’s healthy and invigorating. It is superfluous and essential. It is above all fundamental in the constitution of all cells, tissues, organs and systems of all organisms.
