Common Causes of Infant Constipation
It is completely normal for newborns to have a bowel movement several times a day or as little as once a week. In some cases, although it is usually rare, it can take up to three weeks between stools for the child. A baby should only be treated with laxatives if they are suffering from long bowel movements and you should consult a professional. Breastfed babies most often exhibit frequent bowel movements until they are two to three months old, and their stools are usually yellowish in color. Breastfeeding babies usually open their bowels with each feed and may open their bowels up to 6 times a day. Bottle-fed babies, on the other hand, can only have a bowel movement once a day or even once every two or three days.
Constipation can be a common cause of abdominal pain in infants, and there can be a range of variation in how often they open their bowels. Any child who does not pass stools as often as every other day or has very hard stools is generally considered constipated. Constipation can occur in newborns, infants, toddlers, or even children of any age. Childhood constipation is a common condition, but it is rarely due to medical conditions that require medical intervention. During the neonatal period (first 28 days), constipation is rare in breastfed children and is more likely to occur in bottle-fed babies.
A high percentage of constipation after the age of one year most often stems from a deliberate reluctance to go to the toilet. In older infants this may be due to them becoming too involved in activities to want to obey the urge to go to the toilet, but in younger infants it is usually associated with toilet training . Whatever the causes however, constipation in children needs to be recognized and requires special attention. Unresolved constipation in infants leads to stool piling up in the child’s rectum, which can lead to abdominal distension and pain. Prolonged constipation also makes infants more likely to develop urinary tract infections.
The following are both medical and non-medical causes of childhood constipation:
- Switching from breast milk to bottles or solid meals
- Not drinking enough water or fluids – this is one of the most common causes in older infants
- Have a diet low in fiber, for children who consume solid foods
- Certain medications like cough medicine can cause constipation in children
- Potty training anxiety – especially common in toddlers and older children. Parents should be careful not to be harsh with potty training and to encourage
- Missing or blocked anus from birth (anal stricture)
- Hirschsprung’s disease – a condition from birth where the child has a nerve cell defect that affects communication between the brain and intestines
- Diabetes
- Down syndrome and cystic fibrosis are often associated with childhood constipation
- Low thyroid function
- Lead poisoning although this is generally quite rare in developing countries
