The Hepatitis Epidemic
Today, an estimated 5 million Americans are infected with hepatitis C – and most of them don’t know it. It’s 1 in 50…..and some will be people you know. One in 10 veterans is infected, 62% of Vietnam veterans have it. Three people with hepatitis C die every day, including two veterans.
Hepatitis C is considered an epidemic and now kills more people than AIDS/HIV…30,000 a year and it will get worse. The number of adults seeking liver transplants for hepatitis C infection will skyrocket over the next 20 years. It is estimated that 10,000 to 30,000 Americans die from this disease each year. Deaths are believed to be increasing due to the increasing risk of infection and resulting cirrhosis, portal hypertension, thrombocytopenia, bleeding varices and liver cancer. Five years ago, 20% of hepatitis C patients were candidates for liver transplantation and today that number has risen to around 50%.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), by 2008, cases of decompensation will increase by 279%, liver-related deaths by 223%, and the need for liver transplantation by 528%. Considering that we don’t have enough organs now and people are dying on transplant lists, far too many of those precious lives will be lost. For those lucky enough to find a donor, the process costs around $300,000 in the first 3 months and can be painful and disabling. Add to that the thousands of dollars for anti-rejection drugs and the follow-up costs of more frequent visits to health facilities. The other option, debilitating and woefully ineffective chemo, costs tens of thousands of dollars and more and has single-digit success rates.
Hepatitis C is called the dragon because it sleeps for many years and one day suddenly it wakes up and ends your life (people who were infected 20-30 years ago can find out now) . The Hepatitis C virus is very old and very intelligent…it doesn’t kill quickly like the old HIV virus or like the Ebola virus. Hepatitis C chose to infect the liver. The ONLY organ capable of regeneration. It simmers for many years, keeping its host alive. He is so smart that he uses our own immune system against us.
No one knows exactly where it comes from. During World War II, an unlicensed yellow fever vaccine was released to immunize our troops traveling to the South Pacific. To stabilize the vaccine, scientists used serum from Australian Aborigines, hoping that they were immune to endemic diseases and that the immunity would then be passed on to our troops. Years later it was discovered that 50% of Aborigines had Hepatitis B and C. A study by the Veterans Administration later PROVED that over 320,000 of our soldiers were infected. Thousands of them fell ill with hepatitis and were hospitalized or quarantined in their barracks. When they returned home, they were encouraged to donate blood. A monster, endowed with the power to mutate, had just been unleashed.
Hepatitis C is transmitted only through blood. This means blood transfusions with blood contaminated before 1992 (because the blood was not checked), tattoos, body piercings, needle sticks, intravenous medications with contaminated needles, manicures that have you causes bleeding (instruments are not sterilized), sharing razors, toothbrushes, anything that could pass infected blood into your bloodstream. Even taking IV meds once could have given you the virus or shared straws with someone who had nasal sores or bleeding.
A mutant virus for which there is no vaccine. It has many strains and substrains. By the time they understand something about it, it’s already mutated into something stronger. 70-75% of people have genotype 1, the most difficult strain to treat. 95% of veterans who have hepatitis C have genotype 1. The success rate with traditional modern medicine treatment is only about 50% and the treatment lasts an entire year and the side effects of the drugs are cruel. For veterans, the success rate is only 19%…and sadly, even this treatment is only approved for 11.8% of them.
The hepatitis C virus causes diabetes (40% of people with genotype 1 have diabetes), it affects the brain causing depression, it causes lung problems, neuropathy, fibromyalgia, Sjögren’s disease, heart problems, skin problems, arthritis, stomach problems, anemia, fatigue and of course, cirrhosis. After cirrhosis comes DECOMPENSATION. The liver stops working, the skin and sclera turn yellow, your belly looks like a pregnancy, you are unable to process protein, you become anemic, confused, the kidneys stop working and many bleed to death.
Many infected people already have severe liver damage and don’t know it…and they seek out herbal products to treat the symptoms they have. What many people don’t know is that there are at least three excellent, inexpensive supplements that can be used for hepatitis. First, an aqueous extract of the oleander plant commonly known as “oleander soup” prepared as directed in the book “Cancer’s Natural Enemy” has had excellent results in the treatment of hepatitis-C. .
Second, colloidal silver has been used by a large number of people who testify that it is unrivaled in the treatment of hepatitis.
And third, there is an excellent herbal supplement treatment regimen for hepatitis that is all-natural, inexpensive, and extraordinarily effective. Most people in the United States are unaware of Berkson’s clinical study on hepatitis C, a study that was never published in the United States, despite Dr. Berkson’s impressive credentials which include Rutgers, the Max Planck Institute and the Center for Disease Control. (CDS) in Atlanta.
It has been suggested that the real reason the study was never published in the United States is because liver transplants are very cost effective for mainstream medicine, costing over $300,000 over the three first few months only, plus several thousand dollars thereafter for anti-rejection medication and follow-up.
In Dr. Berksons’ study, which was 100% effective in a limited study of patients with advanced hepatitis C who were facing transplants or chemotherapy, he used a combination of three commonly available natural supplements and inexpensive, as well as healthy modifications in diet, exercise, and lifestyle.
And what are the supplements? Milk thistle (silymarin), alpha-lipoic acid and selenium – all commonly available and inexpensive. I have been using milk thistle for years, having read long ago that it was found to be effective not only in protecting the liver but also in regenerating damaged livers by the German Commission E (their FDA equivalent). Now I take all three supplements to help offset a fondness for another natural substance – blue agave (smile).
In the treatment of any illness or disease, it is generally an excellent idea to cleanse the body of toxins (toxins help promote disease and delay healing). A liver flush is a very good procedure to use to help treat hepatitis as well as a good procedure for anyone who can use it as part of a healthy anti-disease lifestyle. And, just as good health begins in the gut, so does colon cleansing. Liver and colon cleanses are widely available online and at natural health product retail outlets.
