Omega-3 Supplements Improve Eyesight
As if omega-3 supplements didn’t provide enough benefit to the body, new research shows that omega-3s can improve eyesight and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). , the leading cause of blindness. A new study in the Archives of Opthalmology has strong evidence that a daily dose of omega-3s from fish oil supplements can reduce the risk of developing AMD. This long-term study involved the participation of more than 4,500 men and women between the ages of 60 and 80. Between the years 1992 and 1998, they were regularly examined for symptoms of AMD. They were also asked to list the foods they ate regularly. Researchers found that participants who consumed high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids through deep-sea fish like salmon were 39% less likely to develop age-related eye problems. In addition to providing the DHA needed for a healthy retina, researchers have determined that omega-3 fatty acids also reduce AMD by promoting healthy blood vessels and reducing inflammation. These results and other studies on the benefits of omega-3 EFAs show that we can definitely take control of our long-term health by eating the right foods before old age hits.
The good news is that it’s easy to prevent AMD with diet. Start by eating at least two servings of oily deep-sea fish like salmon and mackerel at least twice a week. If you’re a vegetarian, you can get omega-3 EFAs from non-fish sources like nuts and dark green vegetables. Supplement your diet with fish oil, echium oil, or flaxseed oil supplements to ensure there are enough omega-3 EFAs in your diet. Avoid or reduce the consumption of foods containing trans fats and omega-6 fatty acids, as these tend to inhibit the health benefits provided by omega-3 EFAs.
