Generally there isn’t much of a problem getting your child to sleep one night as you have the advantage of routine, you know the bath, bottle and bed process that gets it every time (well almost) but it’s that nap in the middle of the day that can be the killer, and the more tired your baby is, the more he tries to fight the urge to sleep, and that’s when it can become a nightmare!

I have two young children, neither of whom sleep and so the battle for a good afternoon’s rest has been endless, to the point where I think I’ve tried almost everything. Now the one thing that has always worked for me has been the car – but even that requires a deft touch at the best of times. So today I want to share with you some tips on how the family car can be your savior when it comes to getting your baby to sleep during the day.

Using the car to put your baby or toddler to sleep.

Step 1: Put them in the car.

Toddlers especially, fight the urge to get in the car, so play up interests by suggesting a car ride to see these things (like Diggers and the Postman for example)

Step 2: Be prepared.

Once you have your baby or toddler strapped into the car, it’s essential that you have their bottle (if it’s part of the routine to help them sleep) and also a pacifier (again if it’s is something your baby uses). A good tip here is to make sure you have at least 3 models with you!

Inevitably, your baby will spit one out on the floor behind the front seats and start screaming until you give him a new one. It’s much easier to reach your “reserve” than to reach out and risk an accident.

Another important tip to remember is to take off your child’s shoes and socks and any other distracting, rustling or heavy clothing. Not only does this make baby more comfortable in the seat, but it also means you don’t have to risk waking him up trying to take him out later.

As for music, if your child usually listens to music in the car, I suggest you play it. Even though it’s loud and uplifting music, you’ll be surprised how quickly your baby falls asleep.

The secret is in the familiarity of the environmentand on that note, the most important factor in getting your baby to sleep in the car – the infant car seat.

Choosing the right infant car seat is key anyway, and that comfort comes into play when trying to get your baby to sleep. Make sure you have the right seat for your baby and that it is installed correctly. This will not only ensure your baby’s safety, but will also make the process of falling asleep easier.

Step 3: Transfer them out of the car.

Letting your baby or toddler sleep in the car for long periods of time, regardless of the temperature, is not recommended, so the final part of the puzzle is getting your baby back into the house. I usually find this not a problem at all with the baby, but any child over 18 months can start waking up very easily when being transferred, so I would recommend getting the bed and room ready first, then move it as gently as possible.

In summary, make sure you have all your baby’s extra comforters and pacifiers close at hand, as well as prepare the bottle and everything you need. With toddlers, use distractions and let them listen to whatever they want, trust me – when they’re tired, they’ll sleep.
